Wendy Williams’ attorney reveals the surprise date controversial guardianship could end

Wendy Williams’ lawyer believes the television star might no longer be under court-ordered guardianship by the end of this year.

Since 2022, Williams has been under legal guardianship due to health concerns. He was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia in 2023.

Recently, doctors discovered that Williams, 61, doesn’t have frontotemporal dementia. This new information has made it more likely that the current arrangement will be ended.

Now Williams’ lawyer Joe Tacopina now says the end of her guardianship could be in sight.

Oh my gosh, I heard it with my own ears! On Nightline, someone connected to the case said they have guardianship attorneys working on it, and they promised Wendy will be free from the guardianship by the end of the year! I’m just holding my breath and waiting, but it sounds so hopeful! I’ve been following this for so long, and to hear that finally…it’s amazing!

Tacopina maintains she doesn’t have FTP and suggests any memory issues she experienced are likely due to past alcohol abuse.

Her lawyer stated definitively, ‘She doesn’t have frontotemporal dementia. That settles the matter.’

However he postulated she may have suffered from ‘alcohol-induced dementia’.

He mentioned a condition called alcohol-induced dementia, suggesting Wendy may have been experiencing it in 2023 or 2024. He confirmed she struggled with alcoholism.

Let’s talk honestly: I’ve seen situations where someone’s reliance on alcohol completely takes over their life. With Wendy, it was heartbreakingly clear – she was struggling constantly, appearing lost and in desperate need of support. It wasn’t just a phase; she genuinely needed professional help, specifically an alcohol rehabilitation program, to get her life back on track.

In 2023, Williams received diagnoses of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia. Despite these conditions, she maintains she is capable of managing her own affairs and is seeking to end the legal guardianship that she believes is unjustly controlling her life.

According to a recent report from TMZ, doctors in New York City have confirmed she doesn’t have functional neurological disorder after running several tests.

Experts agree that people with this condition don’t get better and will continue to worsen over time.

However, the report highlights Williams’s impressive recovery and brain health since getting sober three years ago. Even so, the legal guardianship remains in place.

Williams recently went to the wedding of Chris Tacopina, her lawyer’s son, and appeared in a celebratory post he shared online.

In September, she went to fashion shows featuring LaQuen Smith and Bach Mai during New York Fashion Week.

In 2024, doctors announced that actress Wendy Williams had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia. They explained that she had a series of medical tests before receiving the diagnosis.

She received new information about her diagnosis several months after the results of a previous medical evaluation became known.

Legal documents obtained by People magazine in August show that doctors, after reviewing Williams’ medical tests, shared their assessment of her neurological condition and provided a diagnosis.

Although official documents don’t state her diagnosis, people familiar with the situation have revealed that tests showed Williams is living with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and aphasia.

Williams has been under a guardianship since 2022.

A court took control of her personal and financial decisions because her bank worried about her mental health and the possibility she was being financially taken advantage of.

She is currently staying at the Coterie – an assisted-living facility in Hudson Yards, New York.

She entered the facility over two years after being diagnosed with dementia, following the decision of her legal guardian, Morrissey.

Williams recently shared her frustrations with New York Magazine about living in the Coterie’s memory care unit.

The famous talk show host explained to the publication why she believes staying in a room at the Coterie is a problematic experience.

Williams questioned, “Did you see those people? The elderly ones? Why would I even want to look at that?” He added that he’s repeatedly requested a room on a different floor.

In an interview with TMZ, she stated that the building she was referring to is for residents age 60 and over, and playfully added that despite being 61, she still feels fabulous.

Williams shared that she’s been staying positive by regularly attending church services in Brooklyn.

‘It gives me faith,’ she said, ‘and keeps me very well in touch with God and myself.’

The celebrity, spotted at several events during New York Fashion Week in September, confirmed she’s been getting out and about. ‘I have been going out,’ she said.
