Tony Dokoupil is expected to move from mornings to evenings at CBS News.
Nate Dokoupil, who currently co-hosts “CBS Mornings,” will be the new anchor of “CBS Evening News.” Sources familiar with the decision say an official announcement could come as early as this week.
CBS News did not offer a statement. Dokoupil, age 44, also did not respond when asked for comment.
CBS News’ main broadcast is going back to having a single anchor. After a year of being co-hosted by John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, both journalists are leaving the network this month.
Bringing on Dokoupil isn’t expected to significantly alter the program’s current approach. He’s been with CBS News since 2016, having previously worked at NBC for three years, and became a co-host on CBS Mornings in 2019.
Bari Weiss, the new editor in chief at CBS News, reportedly wanted to hire someone from outside the company, and Bret Baier, a news anchor at Fox News, was considered. CNN’s Anderson Cooper was also a possibility, but he recently renewed his contract with CNN.

Hollywood Inc.
‘A Town Hall with Erika Kirk’ will air Dec. 13 with Weiss as moderator.
Last year, The Free Press, a digital news site co-founded by Bari Weiss and now owned by Paramount, strongly supported Ben Dokoupil after he faced criticism for a tough interview he did with author Ta-Nehisi Coates.
During an editorial meeting, CBS News officials criticized correspondent Seth Dokoupil for his questioning of Ta-Nehisi Coates about his book, “The Message,” which focuses on the conflict between Israel and Gaza. The network said the interview didn’t meet their standards and came after several staff members raised concerns.
A recording of the meeting was posted on the Free Press site.
According to the editors of The Free Press, journalists like Tony Dokoupil are becoming increasingly rare in traditional news companies, which are struggling to adapt to a new, dominant way of thinking.
Shari Redstone, who previously held the largest share in Paramount (the company that owns CBS News), also publicly backed Dokoupil. She criticized CBS News leaders for how they dealt with the situation, calling it “a bad mistake.” The two executives responsible for the editorial decision, Wendy McMahon and Adrienne Roark, have since left the network.
