Simon Cowell is searching for talented young men to form his next big boy band.
‘Right now, record labels aren’t signing enough new talent,’ the music mogul, 66, said.
It’s a bit awkward for Simon Cowell, but we’ve learned that a contestant on his new Netflix show, The Next Act, was also on another talent competition just two years ago.
Daniel Bretherton, a 16-year-old singer-songwriter from Chorley, first became known for his appearance on Season 7 of ITV’s The Voice Kids. He performed on Ronan Keating’s team during the show.
He didn’t let mean comments from classmates stop him from taking the opportunity. His mother, Ranveer, explained that he wouldn’t have even considered the show if he’d stayed at his previous school, as the bullying there had really upset him.
Daniel was severely bullied at his old school. Someone shared a video of the bullying online, and he faced a lot of teasing from other students. Things became so difficult that we decided to move him to a new school, which has been a really positive change.

You know, I’ve always said that courage can bloom in the most unexpected places. Take Danny, for example. Even though he was dealing with bullying at just 14, he decided to try out for The Voice Kids. And get this – he wasn’t just any contestant! He made it through the first round of blind auditions, beating out around 360,000 other talented kids. It’s a beautiful reminder that believing in yourself can take you so far.
After being eliminated during the Battle rounds on a singing competition, and struggling to launch a successful music career afterward, he’s hoping to find his big break on The Next Act – a project searching for the members of the next huge international boyband.
This six-part Netflix documentary series will chronicle the journey of the future group members, starting with the initial open auditions and culminating in the release of their first song.
Simon Cowell faced a real challenge with this group of contestants, who are shown playfully fighting and disagreeing in the latest trailer as they compete in tough auditions to earn a place in the new band. Ultimately, 16 finalists made it to Miami, and Daniel was one of the twelve who advanced even further in the competition.
Cowell compared the process to ‘mining for diamonds’.
Before shooting began, Simon Cowell stated he was specifically looking for fresh faces for his new project, even though Daniel had previously appeared on another television program.
A judge on Britain’s Got Talent is worried that the UK isn’t discovering enough exciting new talent. They believe record labels aren’t signing enough fresh artists, and that these artists are struggling to stand out due to the high level of competition online.
Simon Cowell, famous for launching groups like One Direction and Westlife, believes record labels need to start discovering and signing more new artists. He recently told the Daily Mail that they aren’t currently doing enough to find fresh talent.

The number of UK artists achieving international success has dropped dramatically, likely because of increased competition online.
No one is going to just present opportunities to you – you have to actively seek them out. That’s why we’re taking the initiative and making things happen ourselves.
Despite enjoying my work on television, I really miss the early days of discovering and working with musicians,” Simon Cowell shares in the preview. “There’s a huge potential out there, and I’m determined to create the next big boy band.
He admits there’s a lot riding on this. He’s worried that if it doesn’t go well, people will think he’s lost his touch.
Simon Cowell, with an estimated net worth of £475 million, has a long history of discovering new performers. He’s been a judge on popular music and talent reality shows since 2001, including programs like Pop Idol, American Idol, Britain’s Got Talent, America’s Got Talent, and The X Factor.
For 14 years, The X Factor had a huge impact on British music, launching the careers of major artists like One Direction, Leona Lewis, Little Mix, JLS, and Olly Murs.
With fewer people watching and reports of past contestants being mistreated, ITV announced in 2021 that the show wouldn’t be returning for another season.
Simon Cowell is hoping his next artist will be just as successful as those he’s worked with before, achieving record-breaking sales and worldwide popularity.
Simon Cowell: The Next Act is on Netflix on December 10.
