Despite the difficulties in his life – whether publicly reported or detailed in his autobiography, Spare – Prince Harry has maintained his sense of humor, a common trait among those who overcome hardship. This was clear again recently when he jokingly compared life with the royal family to the TV show Downton Abbey.
What Did Prince Harry Say About Life With The Royals Being Like Downton Abbey?
Many people strive for fame, but actually living under constant public scrutiny can be incredibly challenging, even for those who seem well-equipped to handle it. Prince Harry experienced this firsthand, having been born into the spotlight as the son of Princess Diana and King Charles III. Though he faced public difficulties growing up, particularly the tragic loss of his mother, his decision to step back from royal duties to protect his wife, Meghan Markle, and the subsequent fallout, have arguably been his most publicly debated challenges.
Prince Harry recently shared what it’s like being a royal family member while speaking at the British-American Business Council’s annual Christmas Luncheon, as reported by People. He did so by playfully comparing life as a royal to a popular TV show.
People often wonder if my childhood with the royal family resembled Julian Fellowes’ Downton Abbey. It’s similar, except Downton Abbey is the one with all the drama, secrets, fancy dinners, and marriages to Americans – the real world was just normal life.
You got me, my friend! That was a clever point. It would have been even funnier if he’d said it with an American accent, wouldn’t it?
Even with all the upheaval the wealthy Crawley family experienced over six seasons and three films – including wars, epidemics, and scandals – the recent experiences of Prince Harry seem even more dramatic. The Crawleys faced significant challenges, but Prince Harry felt compelled to step away from his royal life and publicly address personal conflicts to explain his and Meghan Markle’s choices.
It would take a while to cover everything the Crawleys have faced in their show, but honestly, it’s even harder to recount all the stories – both true and rumored – about Prince Harry’s life as a royal. And that’s saying something, considering I have the whole internet to work with!
At least he’s handling all the drama and gossip with a good sense of humor, and that’s perfectly fine.
