Viggo Mortensen, who famously played Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, will not reprise his role in the upcoming live-action film, The Hunt for Gollum. While Aragorn is expected to appear in the new movie, a different actor will portray him. This film will continue adapting stories from J.R.R. Tolkien’s world of Middle-earth.
According to Knight Edge Media, Andy Serkis (who is also playing Gollum again, as he did in The Lord of the Rings) has already been meeting with potential young actors for the role. However, the identities of these actors haven’t been revealed yet.
. However, that would come with certain challenges.
Viggo Mortensen first appeared as Aragorn, also known as “Strider,” in a short film that bridges the events of The Lord of the Rings. This film shows Gandalf trying to find out what happened to the One Ring and searching for Gollum, with Aragorn assisting him after Bilbo’s 111th birthday celebration.
To make Viggo Mortensen look like his 25-year-old self for the entire film would have needed constant use of digital de-aging effects. But this technology is usually reserved for flashbacks or specific scenes, and it’s likely very expensive. Therefore, recasting the role seems like a more sensible solution.
Despite a potential reduced role, Viggo Mortensen could still appear in future films. As Knight Edge points out, Martin Freeman successfully took over the role from Ian Holm in The Lord of the Rings films. Holm himself appeared in a framing narrative in the prequel trilogy, shown writing about his journey to the Lonely Mountain in the Red Book. A similar approach could be used in The Hunt for Gollum, with Aragorn, now King Elessar, either writing his account or recounting it to his son, Eldarion, or another of his children.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Will Reportedly Recast Aragorn
The news that Viggo Mortensen likely won’t return as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum might disappoint fans, but there’s still plenty to look forward to in the new movie.
Andy Serkis will return to direct and play Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The film will also feature Frodo Baggins, the Hobbit who eventually becomes the hero of Middle-earth.
Filming for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will start in New Zealand in May. The movie is expected to come out in theaters on December 17, 2027.
