Following a unique year hosting his late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel has confirmed he’ll continue in the role for the foreseeable future.
Jimmy Kimmel has renewed his contract with ABC for another year, meaning “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will stay on the air through May 2027. His previous agreement was set to expire in May 2026.
The news, initially reported by Bloomberg, follows a recent suspension of Jimmy Kimmel. This happened after strong criticism of comments he made regarding conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Both Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group, which own many ABC stations, decided not to broadcast the show shortly before the suspension was made official.
I was really interested to see Jimmy Kimmel back on TV after being off the air for almost a week. When he returned, he gave a really heartfelt speech, passionately arguing for the importance of free speech. He didn’t actually say ‘sorry’ for what he’d said – apparently, the networks wanted an apology before they’d show the show again – but thankfully, both Nexstar and Sinclair started airing it pretty quickly after he came back on. It was good to have him back, and to hear him speak so strongly about something he believes in.

Jimmy Kimmel was back on ABC’s late-night show Tuesday, where he spoke about the controversy surrounding his remarks about Charlie Kirk and expressed gratitude for the support he received over the last week.
When Kimmel briefly stepped away from his show, he quickly became a focal point in a heated public debate. While many in the entertainment industry – including fellow hosts, actors, and writers, as well as a former Disney executive – criticized ABC’s decision to temporarily halt production, others praised it. This included prominent figures like President Trump and Brendan Carr, the head of the Federal Communications Commission, who had previously called on ABC to address Kimmel’s statements.
Ever since CBS announced it wouldn’t be continuing “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” this July, there’s been a lot of discussion about freedom of speech. CBS claims the decision was purely financial, and not related to speculation that it stemmed from Colbert’s criticism of a deal between the Trump administration and Paramount – CBS’s parent company – regarding a 2024 “60 Minutes” interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
I remember back in 2022, there was a lot of talk about Jimmy Kimmel potentially leaving his show, so when he signed a new three-year deal, it felt like a big relief for everyone involved. It essentially secured his position for a while and put those rumors to rest, at least for the time being.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35 Central.
