As a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I was so excited to hear that Warner Bros. and Fathom Events are bringing the extended editions of the trilogy back to theaters! They just announced the dates to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, and I’ve already marked my calendar!
Lord of the Rings’ extended editions to return to theaters in 2026
To mark the 25th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Warner Bros. and Fathom Events will bring Peter Jackson’s complete trilogy back to movie theaters in 2026. According to Variety, the films will first be shown in DBOX, an immersive sound and motion format, from January 16th to 19th, and then in standard format from January 23rd to 25th.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Warner Bros. and Fathom have unveiled a new logo and trailer. Fans can also enjoy special themed treats at select movie theaters. AMC will have exclusive popcorn buckets featuring maps of Middle-earth, and Regal, along with other local cinemas, will offer buckets designed like the One Ring.
The first three Lord of the Rings movies, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, came out between 2001 and 2003, produced by New Line Cinema. Peter Jackson directed the films, and he worked with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens to write the scripts. Remarkably, the entire trilogy was filmed at once in New Zealand.
The series was a huge financial and critical success, earning almost $3 billion globally and winning a total of 17 Academy Awards. Specifically, The Return of the King won 11 Oscars, a record it shares with Ben-Hur and Titanic. Director Peter Jackson later revisited the world of Middle-earth to create The Hobbit trilogy, releasing the films in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
The extended editions of the films are about 11 and a half hours long, while the original theatrical releases clock in at a little over nine hours. Warner Bros. made each extended edition available on DVD and Blu-ray one year after it first appeared in theaters.
Fathom and Warner Bros. showed remastered 4K Ultra HD versions of the extended editions in theaters earlier this year. These new showings will continue the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the first movie in the trilogy.
