President Donald Trump told reporters he’d make the Kennedy Center ceremony special for the honorees, and he absolutely delivered on that promise.
As a film buff, I watched the ceremony, and like everyone before him, he offered congratulations to the honorees, mixing in a few laughs. Trump started by talking about himself, claiming he was the first president to ever host the event, and then spent the next twelve minutes playfully teasing people in the entertainment world.
Even though Donald Trump is often critical of others, some of his comments at the event might not have been meant to be genuinely hurtful, and could have been intended as jokes. He suggested that many of the artists present seemed united by their strong disapproval of him and their efforts to remove him from office.
You know, Trump actually said something interesting about all the Hollywood folks criticizing him. He admitted they were talented, but wished they’d just lay off the attacks. Then, he gave his take on why they were so against him, and it was pretty blunt – he basically called a lot of them ‘miserable, horrible people.’ It’s a pretty strong statement, even for him!
What truly connects all these incredible artists – and many of you in the audience – is perseverance. I see so many of you who simply don’t quit, even when it might be for the best. Honestly, sometimes I wish you would, but you’re remarkably persistent and never give up.
He might have been joking, but it’s hard to tell. Because he doesn’t always show his true feelings, people could easily misinterpret his actions.
Trump explained he didn’t rehearse for the ceremony, stating his good memory made preparation unnecessary. He believes simply being himself is enough, comparing it to Johnny Carson’s authentic on-screen persona. He said, “I didn’t prepare a lot. I have a good memory. You have to be yourself. Johnny Carson was always himself.”
You know, they asked me on the red carpet before the Kennedy Center event if any past presidents could’ve hosted. I said, honestly, I don’t think President Biden would’ve been up to the task. But I really think John F. Kennedy would have absolutely nailed it – he just had that charisma, you know? I basically said he’d have done a very good job, probably the best.
Kennedy Center Honors will air on December 23, 2025, on CBS.
