A new trailer has been released for Anne Hathaway‘s upcoming thriller, Mother Mary. The film centers on a complex and captivating romance between a pop star, played by Hathaway, and a groundbreaking fashion designer, portrayed by Michaela Coel. It’s set to come out next spring.
The musician appears at a gloomy estate in a newly released YouTube trailer, with a fierce thunderstorm adding to the unsettling atmosphere. When she tells designer Sam why she’s there, it becomes obvious they share a complicated past.
In a tearful moment, Hathaway’s character explains she desperately needs a dress and had nowhere else to turn. Sam doesn’t seem to care much, but she immediately begins working on the dress with her assistant, Hilda (Hunter Schafer).

The new trailer suggests a bitter rivalry between the two, with Sam revealing she deeply dislikes the singer after being excluded from their life. In one scene, the singer questions, “Are we really doing this? Are you designing a dress to express your hatred?”
The situation becomes frightening when Hathaway’s character reveals she feels like something is living inside her. She and another person then attempt to get rid of this mysterious presence using seances and a Ouija board.
As the trailer ends, Sam ominously tells her ex, ‘By the time this is finished, it might be down to just one of us.’
The film also features Kaia Gerber, Atheena Frizzell, Jessica Brown Findlay from Downton Abbey, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford of Fleabag, and musician FKA twigs, alongside Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, and Hunter Schafer.
Mother Mary explores complex ideas like secrets, strong emotions, love, transformation, giving up things for others, and being let down, and the creator promises surprising twists for viewers.
She previously told IndieWire that she had a lot of fun and believes audiences will be amazed. “I was completely blown away myself,” she added.
David Lowery is not only writing and directing the project, but he’s also producing it. He’ll be working alongside producers Toby Halbrooks, James M Johnston, Jeanie Igoe, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, and Jonathan Saubach.
The music Anne Hathaway’s character sings in the film will be created by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, who are writing and producing the songs.
The movie Mother Mary is planned to come out in theaters in spring 2026, but the exact release date hasn’t been confirmed yet.
