The new movie is currently in theaters and is attracting huge crowds of game fans, even though critics weren’t impressed. Despite the negative reviews, audiences are really enjoying it, making it one of the biggest horror movie openings of the year – which is fantastic news for Blumhouse.
Last weekend saw the huge release of Zootopia 2, earning over $500 million. This weekend was calmer, but still marked a success with the debut of the sequel to the 2023 film. It opened with $80 million, making it the second-highest grossing film to release simultaneously in theaters and for streaming, following Marvel’s Black Widow.
The new movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is expected to be another success for Blumhouse, demonstrating that some films can attract large audiences regardless of critical reviews. Initial predictions estimated a $40 million opening weekend, but the film quickly exceeded expectations, earning over $30 million on its first day and pushing estimates up to $55 million. While this is lower than the opening of the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, it’s still the second-highest opening weekend for a horror film this year, behind The Conjuring: Last Rites, and marks the biggest domestic opening after Thanksgiving ever.
As a fan, I’m really hoping Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 does well! If it makes around $55 million, it would be one of the highest-grossing films Blumhouse has ever made – only beaten by a couple of their other releases in the last two years. But honestly, while the opening weekend wasn’t as big as the first movie’s, and this one cost way more to make, it might not be the huge hit Blumhouse is counting on, especially with Avatar: Fire and Ash coming out soon and likely taking over all the theaters.
Can ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Ride a Wave of Strong Audience Reviews?
It wasn’t surprising when Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 received a very low score of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. The first movie was poorly reviewed, and the sequel focused even more on appealing to fans of the video game, leaving most critics unimpressed.
Audience reactions to the film have been very positive. Its Popcornmeter score is currently 88%, a bit better than the original movie’s 86%. Most fans, especially those who have played the FNaF video games, feel the film delivers everything they hoped for and exceeds expectations.
The movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 features Josh Hutcherson, Mckenna Grace, Elizabeth Lail, and Matthew Lillard in its cast, and it ends in a way that suggests another sequel is likely. While a third Five Nights at Freddy’s movie might be better received by critics, it’s probably best not to expect too much.
