First look at The Handmaid’s Tale sequel teases return to Gilead with a “new generation of young women”

Hulu has given fans a first glimpse of its follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale. The new series, titled The Testaments and based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel, will revisit the world of Gilead, focusing on the stories of a younger generation of women. It takes place 15 years after the original series’ events.

The show, scheduled to debut in April 2026, is set in the oppressive, religiously controlled world of Gilead. Ann Dowd will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia and also act as one of the story’s narrators.

The new series will center on the experiences of young women growing up in Gilead, as they prepare for marriage. It will feature June Osborne’s daughter, Agnes (formerly known as Hannah), who was separated from her mother, June (played by Elisabeth Moss), at the start of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Joining the cast alongside Dowd is Chase Infiniti, known for their role in One Battle After Another, who will play Agnes. The film also stars Lucy Halliday, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, and Birva Pandya.

In The Testaments, we follow the stories of young women growing up in the oppressive world of Gilead, and the difficult futures they face.

These young women have only ever known life in Gilead, with no clear memories of the world before they were raised within it.

To avoid being forced into marriage and a life of servitude, they’ll need to find help from both new and former allies as they fight for their freedom and the life they want.

Earlier this year, Bruce Miller, the creator of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments, surprisingly compared the sequel series to the movie Mean Girls.

He described the story as a mix of the high school dynamics from Mean Girls and the oppressive world of The Handmaid’s Tale. He explained it’s about the experience of being young and vibrant in a country that’s trying to force you to participate in something terrible, especially after being told you’re valued and perfect.

You can’t change who a teenage girl is, no matter what you try. It’s a foolish plan by Gilead to attempt to control them – a really bad idea, honestly.

The Testaments is set to arrive in April 2026.

The Handmaid’s Tale streams on Hulu in the US and both Channel 4 and Prime Video in the UK.
