As a huge movie fan, I’ve been glued to the news about Netflix possibly buying Warner Bros. – it’s been everywhere the last couple of days! The biggest thing everyone’s talking about is what will happen to the DC Universe. Will Zack Snyder finally get to finish his vision for those who’ve been campaigning for it? Or will James Gunn and Peter Safran keep leading the charge with their plans? We’re starting to get a little more clarity now, thanks to what Warner Bros.’ David Zaslav and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos have both said recently.
Everyone is eager to hear from James Gunn, but despite what you might have read, he hasn’t commented publicly since the merger progressed. Recent statements attributed to him actually came from an interview conducted in mid-November. However, David Zaslav did share his vision for the future of DC on December 4th in a Businessweek interview.
James and Peter have a fantastic creative vision that’s also proving to be very profitable. DC offers us the richest and most diverse stories we have, and no one else is bringing that level of imagination and energy to them right now. The DC universe is vast and powerful enough to thrive across all types of media. Some stories deserve the cinematic experience of a theatrical release, while others are better suited for a longer, serialized format.
This aligns with what Netflix’s Ted Sarandos said on December 5th regarding Warner Bros.’ DC content:
As a huge movie and TV fan, I think studios really need to look beyond just big, blockbuster films when it comes to these established franchises. It’s awesome to see how things like the ‘Penguin’ series from DC have taken off on TV – it proves there’s so much potential to expand these worlds in different ways, not just through massive tentpole movies.
The DCU Seems Safe for Now

Even though fans are asking Netflix to bring back Zack Snyder’s DC universe, it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. James Gunn’s new DC Universe is well underway, and Netflix would need to overcome significant obstacles – including approval from regulators – before it could take control. Several DC films, like Supergirl, Clayface, and potentially two Batman movies, are already planned for release under Gunn’s vision. While Netflix might be interested in reviving Snyder’s universe, it faces many challenges. Snyder is already working with Netflix, and a continuation of Justice League could be a way to improve the performance of some of his other films, such as Rebel Moon and Army of Thieves.
Honestly, it feels like a lot of the actors who were in the old DCEU have already moved on, and if I’m being real, many fans have too – except for a dedicated group who still really want the Snyderverse back. Because of that, I don’t think we’re going to see any major changes to the current DCU anytime soon. A second Justice League movie just doesn’t seem realistic at this point – it would take years to even start thinking about it, and I think the chance of it actually happening has probably already passed.
