Jenna Coleman’s “addictive” British historical drama with “soapy” plot gets new UK streaming home

The British historical drama Victoria, known for its engaging story, is now available on a new streaming service in the UK. The series stars Jenna Coleman (from Doctor Who) as the young Queen Victoria and Tom Hughes as Prince Albert, and it begins with Victoria becoming queen at just 18 years old.

When Queen Victoria becomes ruler, she fights to prove herself in a world run by men. She stands up to those who try to control her and defies anyone who thinks she’s too weak to lead.

I’ve been really enjoying this series! It was made by Daisy Goodwin, and the cast is awesome – Adrian Schiller, Tommy Knight, Jordan Waller, Nell Hudson, Ferdinand Kingsley, Anna Wilson-Jones, Daniela Holtz, and Catherine Flemming all do a great job.

I’m a big fan of Victoria, and it’s really well-regarded – critics seem to love it! It has an average score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, but season three was even better, scoring a fantastic 92% based on 13 reviews. I can see why, it was brilliant!

According to The Guardian, the show Victoria is most enjoyable when you can simply relax and lose yourself in the drama, without worrying too much about historical accuracy. It’s best to just enjoy the entertainment for an hour or so and not overthink the details.

According to The Standard, this recipe feels instantly recognizable and satisfying, like a classic comfort food – beautifully presented and expertly made, much like a dessert you’d see on MasterChef.

In a review, The Independent described Victoria as a typical, visually lavish costume drama—the kind of show perfect for relaxed Sunday night viewing when you don’t need to focus too much, perhaps while enjoying a glass of wine and thinking about the week to come.

According to The Telegraph, while the show didn’t captivate me as much as it used to, Jenna Coleman continued to deliver a skillful performance as Victoria, expertly portraying both her regal composure and fiery emotions. The reviewer also noted a slightly more stern or unimpressed side to her portrayal this time around.

The Arts Desk described the show Victoria as “surprisingly addictive,” but noted the computer-generated imagery needed improvement, calling the depictions of the London skyline “mystifyingly inept.”
