Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men Lineup Is Missing A Crucial Part Of The Team

The new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will feature many well-known X-Men, but some key members are noticeably absent. This film is a huge crossover event bringing together heroes from across the Marvel universe. The Avengers and Thunderbolts will team up with the X-Men and Fantastic Four to fight Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.

Disney has officially revealed the X-Men team for the upcoming film at a recent event in Italy. The lineup includes familiar faces like Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

It’s exciting to see Fox’s X-Men characters now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Channing Tatum will finally get to play Gambit as part of the X-Men team after his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, some important mutants are noticeably absent, which leaves out key connections and emotional depth from the X-Men’s story.

Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men Roster Doesn’t Include Any Couples

The X-Men’s fights against enemies, even powerful ones like Apocalypse, are exciting, but what really makes them special is how they work together as a team. Each member is different, with their own beliefs and personality, and the way they relate to each other often creates more compelling stories than the villains they face.

Strong relationships often involve deep connection, like the ones between Jean Grey and Cyclops, or Gambit and Rogue. Jean and Scott Summers are frequently seen as the main couple of the team, and while Rogue and Gambit had a complicated romance for a long time, they’ve recently become a committed couple in the comics.

In the movie Doomsday, Scott and Gambit team up with the Avengers, but Jean and Rogue aren’t included. It’s a letdown to see these two powerful mutant heroes missing, and it’s also a shame there aren’t any romantic connections among the X-Men characters, particularly with Gambit being part of the team.

X-Men ’97 Proved Romance Can Heighten The Emotional Stakes

While Scott and Jean have appeared together in live-action movies several times, Gambit and Rogue haven’t shared a major film scene yet. In the original X-Men trilogy, Rogue was featured with Iceman, and Gambit has been in only two X-Men films without any significant interaction with Rogue.

X-Men ’97 showed that adding romantic connections can make scenes much more emotionally impactful. Gambit’s death is a good example – Rogue’s sadness and desire for revenge made the moment even more powerful and tragic. While it was already a significant loss for the team, Rogue’s reaction amplified the tragedy.

The show effectively portrayed the depth of Jean and Scott’s connection with the Goblin Queen arc. Scott’s affair with Madeline Pryor created tension and inner turmoil for him, making him a more complex and frustrated leader. While this caused disruption within the X-Men, it also resulted in compelling and emotionally resonant scenes for the characters.

Although the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie will probably prioritize action over romance, adding some close relationships between characters would make the fights feel more impactful. Luckily, not all of the actors have been announced yet, which leaves the door open for characters like Rogue and Jean Grey to potentially join the team.
