Percy Jackson Recap: 10 Biggest Story Details To Remember Before Season 2

Get ready for more Percy Jackson! Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians arrives on December 10th. If you need a refresher, here’s what happened in season 1. The Disney+ show, based on Rick Riordan’s popular books, quickly became a hit worldwide – a great turnaround after the previous movie adaptations didn’t succeed.

The series closely followed the popular books, making changes only when they improved the narrative. Thankfully, Disney+ quickly renewed Percy Jackson and the Olympians for both seasons 2 and 3.

Season two premieres on Disney+ December 10th with the first two episodes, followed by a new episode each week. The season will conclude on January 21st. If you’re getting ready to watch, here’s a quick refresher on what happened in season one.

Percy Jackson Is The Half-Blood Son Of Poseidon

When the Percy Jackson series begins, twelve-year-old Percy believes he’s a normal kid who just struggles with attention issues and reading. He’s been told his father died at sea, and his mother, Sally, always speaks fondly of him.

When he arrives at Camp Half-Blood, Percy discovers his father is actually Poseidon, the god of the sea. His mother, Sally Jackson, and Poseidon had fallen in love, but because of the rules among the gods, Poseidon had to leave them both.

As Poseidon’s son, Percy is incredibly strong and tough. He also has the power to control water, allowing him to walk and breathe underwater. While water can help heal his injuries, the effect isn’t permanent and doesn’t last long.

The Big Three Gods Made An Agreement Not To Have Any More Children

Poseidon had to leave Sally and Percy Jackson because he and the other two major gods – Zeus and Hades – had promised not to have any more children. Children of these powerful gods are incredibly strong and have caused significant problems throughout history, even contributing to events like World War II.

If anyone finds the children, they’ll be in serious danger. Plus, kids with parents who are one of the Big Three gods tend to attract monsters more often than other demigods. That’s why Sally Jackson married Gabe Ugliano – his powerful scent was able to mask Percy’s, keeping him hidden.

Sally also wanted to get Percy ready for what being a half-blood meant, understanding he’d eventually need to face the truth. To help with this, she taught him about Greek mythology, hoping it would make learning about his father less shocking.

Annabeth & Grover Are Percy Jackson’s Quest Buddies

The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians follows Percy as he’s tasked with finding Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt. He must return it to Zeus to stop a war between the gods, and he’s joined on this dangerous mission by his friends Annabeth Chase and Grover, who are dedicated to helping him succeed.

It’s not surprising Grover showed up – he’s been Percy’s close friend and protector for a long time. Annabeth’s presence is a bit more unexpected, though, since they didn’t know each other before the quest began.

She joins the quest hoping to demonstrate her abilities. Unlike the previous Percy Jackson story, the hero gets to select who accompanies him, and he chooses Annabeth. He does so because a prophecy warned him that a friend would betray him, and he believes Annabeth would never be capable of such a thing.

Annabeth Is The Daughter Of Athena

Annabeth Chase is the daughter of the goddess Athena, known for wisdom and strategy. Because of this parentage, she’s a strong and skilled fighter in the Percy Jackson series, inheriting powers related to Athena’s abilities. She excels in combat, as demonstrated by her talent in games like capture the flag. Despite her connection to Athena through her parentage, they don’t have a personal relationship.

In the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Annabeth’s family background isn’t a major focus, despite her strong skills in combat and planning. That will change in season two, as her mother, the goddess Athena, will appear. Actress Andra Day has been cast to play Athena in the series.

Ares Has A Grudge Against Percy Jackson

A major difference between the Percy Jackson movies and the TV series is how the character of Ares is handled. The movies completely left him out, but in both the books and the show, Ares plays a key role in setting up the main characters. He deliberately sends Percy, Annabeth, and Grover on a dangerous quest to retrieve his shield, knowing it’s a trap. He also tricks Percy by giving him a backpack that contains the stolen masterbolt, making it look like Percy committed the theft.

Ares and Percy fight, and Percy defeats him with his ability to control water and his sword. This loss fuels a strong resentment in Ares towards Percy Jackson, and it’s likely this conflict will reappear later in the series.

Grover Is Going On A Quest To Find Pan

Ever since the beginning of the Percy Jackson stories, Grover has dreamed of a great adventure: finding Pan, the lost god of the satyrs. Many satyrs have tried to locate Pan before, but no one has ever succeeded. Before Grover can even begin his search, he needs permission from the satyr council.

At first, people are hesitant to trust him because he didn’t succeed in his first role as a protector. However, at the end of the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, he earns a special badge that allows him to begin his quest to locate the legendary Pan. This quest will become important to his story in the next season, The Sea of Monsters.

Zeus Transformed His Daughter Thalia Into A Tree That Protects Camp Half-Blood

The Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians establishes the character of Thalia, Zeus’s daughter, though she isn’t physically shown. Thalia, along with Luke and Annabeth, were close friends who all ran away from home and relied on each other for support. Because Thalia was a child of one of the most powerful gods, monsters were drawn to her, making their lives dangerous.

She almost lost her life defending Luke and Annabeth. That’s why we don’t see her anymore – her father transformed her into a tree just in time. This tree now acts as a barrier, preventing monsters from getting into Camp Half-Blood.

The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will feature the character Thalia in person, played by actress Tamara Smart. While she’ll appear in multiple episodes, the details of her role are currently unknown.

Luke Is The Traitor & He Escapes

Throughout the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the main conflict revolves around someone stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt, and Zeus’s threat to start a war in response. The show keeps the thief’s identity a secret until the very end, revealing it to be Luke, a friend of Percy’s and the son of Hermes – the same person the prophecy warned about betraying him.

He stole Zeus’s master bolt and tricked Ares into believing a godly war would benefit him, using the bolt to make it look like Percy was the thief. He’s acting on orders from Kronos, the original Titan king, who is plotting to regain power.

Instead of harming Percy, the villain attempted to persuade him to switch allegiances. When Percy wouldn’t join them, they escaped Camp Half-Blood using a magical portal.

Kronos Has Been Manipulating The Gods The Entire Time

While Luke seems to be controlling Ares, Kronos, the Titan, is actually the one manipulating Luke. Kronos planned the theft, predicting how his children would respond, all to ignite a war and create chaos. His ultimate goal is to break free from Tartarus and regain his power.

Kronos has been haunting Percy Jackson’s dreams, and finally appears to him directly in a nightmare during the season’s climax. He appears shrouded in dark, torn cloth and carrying a lamp. Given his importance as the main villain throughout the Percy Jackson books, it’s probable that Kronos will reappear in season 2.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians Season 2 Will Follow Rick Riordan’s The Sea Of Monsters

The most important thing for viewers to keep in mind isn’t the show itself, but where it comes from. Since “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is based on Rick Riordan’s books, anyone curious about what happens can simply read those instead of searching for spoilers.

The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians was based on the book The Lightning Thief. Season two will cover The Sea of Monsters, and season three, which Disney+ has already ordered and is currently filming, will adapt The Titan’s Curse.

I haven’t shared many details in this article to avoid spoilers, but even if you’re familiar with the story, I can assure you that Percy Jackson is still worth checking out.
