Anna Maxwell Martin’s Downton Abbey spoof praised as ‘one of the funniest British comedies in years’

Critics are praising Fackham Hall, a comedy series that playfully imitates Downton Abbey. Starring Anna Maxwell Martin, the show is being called one of the year’s funniest. Comedian Jimmy Carr, who also appears as the local vicar, wrote the story about a porter who falls for the daughter of an esteemed family.

The film boasts a remarkable cast including Tom Felton, Sue Johnston, Tom Goodman-Hill, Katherine Waterston, Emma Laird, Ben Radcliffe, Thomasin McKenzie, and Damian Lewis, alongside Martin and Carr.

The movie is a funny story about a pickpocket (Radcliffe) who cons his way into working at the impressive Fackham Hall. While there, he falls for the lord’s (Lewis) independent daughter (McKenzie), who is unfortunately engaged to another man (Felton) in a desperate attempt to save her family from going bankrupt.

Early reviews have been very positive, with 83% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes giving the film their approval, based on 24 reviews. However, it needs a few more reviews to officially be considered ‘fresh’ on the site.

Critics are calling this comedy a hilarious and wonderfully silly parody. NYC Movie Guru said it’s one of the funniest British comedies since A Fish Called Wanda, and the Seattle Times described it as a delightfully lighthearted escape.

The New York Times praised the film, noting that it was brought to life by its actors. They wrote that director Jim O’Hanlon’s Fackham Hall features a cast who fully embrace the witty dialogue and playful spirit of the movie.

According to IndieWire, Fackham Hall is packed with over ninety minutes of constant comedy – think puns, clever wordplay, silly physical humor, and slapstick – but it surprisingly still manages to tell a complex story.

Okay, so I just read a review in The Hollywood Reporter about Fackham Hall, and honestly, it’s not going to be one of those legendary parody movies. But, if you’re a Downton Abbey fan, it sounds like it’ll definitely give you some good chuckles.

According to The San Jose Mercury News, the show was funny and occasionally frustrating, but most importantly, it provided a welcome distraction from current events for an hour and a half.

Fackham Hall is released in UK cinemas on 12 December.
