Although fans were hoping for a seventh season of The Expanse, it won’t be happening. However, a new show on Prime Video might fill the void. The cancellation after six seasons was a letdown, particularly since there were still plenty of books to adapt, leaving some storylines unfinished even though the series had a fairly conclusive ending.
Ever since The Expanse finished, I’ve been desperately searching for another sci-fi show that could live up to it – something with that same level of detail and quality. Andor on Disney+ came close, but honestly, Prime Video hasn’t really had anything that could fill the hole The Expanse left. But I’m starting to think that might be about to change – there’s a new show coming that feels like it could be the next best thing, almost like a continuation of season 7!
Prime Video’s Stargate Fills The Void Left By The Expanse

Prime Video announced a new Stargate series in 2025. Stargate is a well-known science fiction franchise that has included both films and television shows. The last live-action series, Stargate Universe, ended in 2011, and now, after nearly 15 years, a new installment is in development.
The upcoming Stargate series is expected to build on the existing story rather than start completely over. Regardless, it promises to be a large-scale science fiction adventure that many hope will fill the void left by The Expanse. While The Expanse and Stargate aren’t exactly the same, they share enough similarities that fans of one will likely enjoy the other. If The Expanse doesn’t return for a seventh season, this new Stargate could help soften the blow.
What The Stargate Reboot Can Learn From The Expanse

One of the most important lessons the Stargate reboot could take from The Expanse – and from modern science fiction as a whole – isn’t about that specific show. Stargate didn’t air during the peak era of television when shows started to feel more like movies, and it could benefit from understanding that shift.
Unlike older shows, The Expanse benefited from modern production techniques, giving it a grand scale and ambitious scope. The new Stargate series has the potential to achieve the same level of visual and narrative complexity. Combined with the rich history of the Stargate universe, the Prime Video reboot could compete with shows like The Expanse, Star Wars, and Star Trek in terms of budget and technical achievement.
While both are great sci-fi shows, Stargate and The Expanse differ significantly. The Expanse built a complex, ongoing story over its seasons, while Stargate generally featured self-contained adventures each episode with new characters and settings. Stargate, especially in its early seasons, also had a more lighthearted and less intense feel compared to The Expanse.
The new Stargate series could benefit from taking a page from The Expanse‘s playbook by blending self-contained episodes with a larger, ongoing story arc. Finding a sweet spot between a serious tone and the franchise’s signature lightheartedness – while still maintaining what makes Stargate unique – would be a great way to improve the show.
Prime Video’s Sci-Fi Catalog Can Give Apple TV Serious Competition

If the new Stargate series is good, Prime Video could become a major player in science fiction, potentially rivaling Apple TV. Apple TV has become known for its strong sci-fi lineup, with popular shows like Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Foundation, Silo, Invasion, For All Mankind, Dark Matter, and Pluribus, as well as the critically acclaimed Severance.
While Apple TV+ is still a strong contender, Prime Video is quickly becoming a major player in science fiction. Shows like The Expanse, The Boys, Outer Range, Fallout, and Tales from the Loop have built a solid collection, and the upcoming Stargate revival promises to add even more. The Expanse is a standout series for Prime Video, and Stargate could help close the gap with Apple TV+.
