Heated Rivalry Episode 3 Story Departure Explained By Star

Be warned, this contains spoilers for episode 3 of Heated Rivalry! François Arnaud, a star of the show, was worried about a major plot twist in the third episode, concerned it might make viewers dislike his character. Heated Rivalry is a romantic drama about two hockey players, Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie), from rival teams – the Montreal Metros and the Boston Raiders – who begin a secret relationship.

The first two episodes of the series, based on Rachel Reid’s Game Changers book series, showed the beginning of a romance between Shane and Ilya. Now, episode 3 shifts the focus to Scott Hunter (played by François Arnaud), the captain of the New York Admirals, and his own love story. Scott is the main character in the first book of the Game Changers series.

In an interview with TV Guide, Arnaud shared his concerns about how fans would react to episode 3 of Heated Rivalry, which heavily featured Scott. He explained that the episode hints the show’s story won’t solely revolve around Shane and Ilya, and that his character’s choices are meant to highlight the broader narrative the first season will explore.

I was surprised when I started reading the script because it felt very different from anything else by creator Jacob Tierney. He’s known for being thoughtful and isn’t against exploring sexuality, but the first episode initially confused me. I decided to trust his vision, and the story truly unfolds beautifully over the six episodes. I think the unexpected turn in Episode 3 hinted that we’d be seeing the story from different perspectives.

For me, the most important thing about any project is the vision and talent of the creators. But it’s also amazing when people actually connect with it! Honestly, it’s been a little crazy. I had a real moment of panic this week, thinking fans who love the original creators, Shane and Ilya, might be upset with me taking over the episodes for a while.

The third episode centers on Scott and his budding romance with Kip, a barista and graduate student played by Robbie G.K. The episode shows their connection developing from initial flirting to becoming intimate. However, they ultimately decide to end the relationship, concluding Scott’s storyline for now, but leaving the possibility open for it to be revisited later in the series.

Though the romance between Shane and Ilya is based on a real-life story, Scott and Kip’s connection is only loosely inspired by it. The main characters, Shane and Ilya, weren’t featured much in the third episode – they mostly made brief appearances. This gave the characters from the earlier books a chance to be the focus.

Arnaud’s comments suggest the show won’t solely center on Shane and Ilya’s romance, even with this recent detour. It seems the series is open to exploring other love stories from the books, creating a broader narrative that complements the main plot.

Now that Scott is featured on an episode of Heated Rivalry, it seems he and Kip will be just as central to the story as the show’s main couple. Even though there are only three episodes left, the show moves quickly and has complex storylines, suggesting there’s still room for plenty of exciting drama.

New episodes of Heated Rivalry arrive Fridays on HBO Max in the US and Crave in Canada.
