Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 branded an “incoherent mess” as it lands brutal Rotten Tomatoes rating

The sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s is getting negative reviews, earning a very low score on Rotten Tomatoes. Emma Tammi directs the film, with Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) returning as Mike Schmidt, a security guard who investigates the spooky secrets behind Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and its creepy animatronics.

Elizabeth Lail returns as police officer Vanessa Shelly, and Piper Rubio is back as Abby, Mike’s younger sister.

This new movie continues the story from the 2024 film, following Abby as she reconnects with the animatronic characters from Freddy’s a year later. It’s based on the popular video game series created by Scott Cawthon, who also wrote the screenplay for both movies.

What to Read Next

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 also uncovers the origins of the deadly Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

Matthew Lillard returns as William Afton, the dangerous serial killer connected to the animatronics and the father of Vanessa.

Skeet Ulrich is also joining the new project, reuniting with Lillard from the Scream franchise. He’ll play Henry Emily, the father of one of Afton’s victims, Charlie. Completing the cast are Mckenna Grace and Teo Briones, who will play paranormal investigators Lisa and Alex.

Similar to the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, which received a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel also failed to impress critics and received mostly negative feedback.

Critics have panned the new Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, calling it a confusing and poorly made film that wouldn’t have even gotten a theatrical release in the past. In fact, it’s received even worse reviews than the original movie, according to the Associated Press.

Bloody Disgusting wasn’t impressed with the film either, describing it as feeling more like a collection of references and hints for fans of the game, rather than a cohesive story with a sensible plot. That’s a harsh critique!

According to The Daily Beast, the main effect of Cawthon’s work seems to be putting audiences to sleep, and The Guardian strongly criticized his writing.

They criticized Cawthon, saying he struggles to authentically portray human experiences and often relies on awkward or unclear allusions instead.

Given the overwhelmingly negative reviews, it’s no surprise the sequel is currently rated very poorly – only 12% – on review websites.

The movie is out today, and its score might shift as more people see it and post reviews. However, it’s unlikely to receive a “Certified Fresh” rating.

Like the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, the sequel has also been popular with audiences, especially those who enjoy horror films.

Tammi’s first film was well-received by audiences, earning an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Her new movie, Five Nights, is already doing even better, achieving an 88% audience score on the site’s Popcornmeter after just one day, based on over 500 verified reviews.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is in cinemas now.

The latest issue of Living Legends is out now, and it’s a special tribute to Dolly Parton! You can find ‘Dolly at 80’ in shops that sell magazines or order it online for only £8.99.
