Paramount is making big changes to its movie plans under new leadership, and some projects have already been cancelled. The new CEO, David Ellison, who has ties to the Trump administration, wants to focus on established franchises like Transformers and Star Trek. This means other films, including a sci-fi movie starring Ryan Reynolds and a spin-off of a classic teen movie, have been put on hold.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has cancelled several projects, including a spin-off of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off called Victor and Sam’s Day Off, and a science fiction film directed by Colin Trevorrow and produced by Ryan Reynolds. The untitled sci-fi movie was reportedly set in the 1980s and centered around Area 51. It’s unknown if Reynolds planned to star in the film, but this is a significant shift for the studio, moving away from both Reynolds and the director of the Jurassic World films. Victor and Sam’s Day Off, which was announced by Paramount+ in 2022, would have followed the two valets who famously took a Ferrari for a drive in the original movie.
Paramount hasn’t just shelved the previously mentioned projects. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the adaptation of the children’s book series Eloise, which was also being produced by Reynolds, has been sold to Netflix. Additionally, a romantic sports drama starring Miles Teller, titled Winter Games, has been cancelled and doesn’t seem likely to be revived. The Hollywood Reporter also points out that despite plans to release about 15 movies each year, Paramount has been cancelling several important projects recently, which is negatively impacting company morale.
Paramount Shifts Focus to ‘Ninja Turtles,’ ‘Sonic,’ And… ‘Rush Hour’?

Paramount Pictures
Paramount is shifting its focus to its biggest franchises, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog, and moving away from smaller projects. A live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is in the works, and discussions about a third Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie have begun, even before the second film is scheduled to release in 2027. Paramount also plans a spin-off film for the Sonic the Hedgehog series, just a year after the fourth main Sonic movie hits theaters.
Paramount is also hoping to attract older audiences with a fourth Rush Hour movie, which was surprisingly announced after Donald Trump reportedly encouraged the project. The news has sparked mixed reactions. While Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are expected to reprise their roles, controversial filmmaker Brett Ratner is set to direct. Despite facing multiple accusations of sexual misconduct, Paramount is willing to work with Ratner, who hasn’t directed a major film since 2014’s Hercules. Currently, Rush Hour 4 doesn’t have a release date, and the main actors haven’t officially committed, meaning the film is still in early stages of development.
