Jon Bernthal is set to return as the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2026, appearing in both a Disney+ special and the upcoming Spider-Man 4, which is currently known as Brand New Day. Because filming for both projects will happen consecutively, Bernthal is explaining how he’ll ensure his portrayal of the character feels consistent despite the very different styles of each story.
Jon Bernthal explains Spider-Man 4’s connection with The Punisher special
After a long absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the end of the Netflix deal, Jon Bernthal returned as Frank Castle in Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again. The story revealed Castle had been in hiding until Daredevil (Matt Murdock) discovered a group of corrupt police officers exploiting the Punisher’s image. Together, they took down Wilson Fisk’s task force designed to stop vigilantes. Though Castle was then imprisoned, he managed to break free, setting the stage for the upcoming Disney+ special.
Right before filming started on The Punisher, Marvel announced that Jon Bernthal would also appear in Spider-Man 4. He filmed scenes for both projects during July and August, paving the way for significant storylines featuring The Punisher in 2026.
Tom Holland’s upcoming Spider-Man project, titled ‘Brand New Day,’ is scheduled to come out in July. It’s expected to launch around the same time as the second season of ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’ Many fans have been curious about how the typically gritty and mature tone of Daredevil will fit into the generally more family-friendly Spider-Man universe, both in terms of story and overall style.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Jon Bernthal described an upcoming Punisher special as incredibly intense, saying it will be “as high-octane Punisher as you’ve ever seen.” He and the creators, Destin Daniel Cretton and Tom Sigel, wanted to ensure the character felt consistent between the Spider-Man universe and this new project, and Bernthal believes they succeeded in creating that seamless transition.
Jon Bernthal’s smooth entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is similar to how Charlie Cox’s Daredevil was first reintroduced – with smaller roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
The next Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, might feature a dynamic similar to The Punisher, largely because of its large cast. Returning favorites like Mark Ruffalo and Michael Mando will be joined by new actors including Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, and Marvin Jones III, who will play Tombstone.
