Margot Robbie breaks silence on backlash to Jacob Elordi’s casting in Wuthering Heights

Margot Robbie recently discussed the casting of Jacob Elordi in the new film version of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Elordi will play Heathcliff alongside Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw. Some fans expressed concern about his casting because the character of Heathcliff is described as having dark skin in the original 1847 novel.

Robbie recently asked reviewers to hold off on forming opinions about Elordi’s acting until the movie is released early next year.

“I saw him play Heathcliff,” the Barbie star told Vogue. “And he is Heathcliff.”

“I get it,” she said. “There’s nothing else to go off at this point until people see the movie.”

Fennell previously praised Robbie and explained why exactly she got the role.

The role really needed someone like Margot, a true star. She’s not only an amazing actress, but she also has a captivating presence – almost a supernatural quality – that completely mesmerizes audiences.

The cast of Wuthering Heights includes Owen Cooper, known for his role in Adolescence, as young Heathcliff, alongside Alison Oliver, Shazad Latif, Hong Chau, and Ewan Mitchell from House of the Dragon, in addition to Robbie and Elordi.

Anthony Willis composed the music for the movie, and Charli XCX created original songs for it. Two of those songs, ‘House’ and ‘Chains of Love’, were released with the film’s trailer last month.

Wuthering Heights is out in UK and US cinemas on 13 February, 2026.
