Be warned: the following contains spoilers for the first six episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Season 22, which is available to stream on Hulu.
Though we have a bit of a wait until Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy arrives in 2026 – the last episode ended with a dramatic cliffhanger! – there’s some good news: Kate Walsh is returning as Addison Montgomery. Now, fans are hoping to see some compelling storylines when she visits Seattle again.
I’m really excited to see Kate Walsh return as Addison Montgomery when Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 continues! According to Variety, she’ll be appearing in the episode “Strip That Down,” which airs on January 29th – that’s the fourth episode of the season’s second half. It’s been a while since we’ve seen her at Grey Sloan Memorial!
We don’t have any information about what Addison’s appearance will be about, but it seems she’ll only be in one episode. If that’s true, I’m hoping her return has something to do with Amelia Shepherd, her former sister-in-law.
I was really bummed when Amelia dealt with Monica’s death – it felt so raw. Then, Caterina Scorsone, who plays Amelia, announced she was taking a break, and it turns out the show’s budget got tighter, so they’re having fewer episodes with some of the main cast. It explains why we haven’t seen her for a while, but I miss her character!

Caterina Scorsone joined Grey’s Anatomy in Season 7, but her character, Amelia, first appeared on the show’s six-season spinoff, Private Practice, which starred Kate Walsh. At that time, Amelia was struggling with addiction, and Addison was the one who knew her best and had been through the most with her.
Viewers love seeing characters from Private Practice reunite, especially those connected to Derek Shepherd. Given Amelia’s guilt about her involvement in the accident that led to Monica’s death, it feels like a good moment to introduce some help – and a familiar face.
Kate Walsh is returning to Grey’s Anatomy for the first time since her appearance in Season 19, which focused on reproductive rights and involved a dramatic storyline where her character was hit by a protester. Having been part of the show since the very beginning – appearing in the first season alongside Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey – Walsh is a veteran presence, famously revealing Derek Shepherd’s marital status to viewers.

Kate Walsh’s character, Addison, was a regular on Grey’s Anatomy for seasons two and three before getting her own show in Los Angeles. She made guest appearances in at least one episode per season until 2012, then hadn’t been seen for almost ten years. Addison returned in season eighteen, appearing for the first time since Derek Shepherd’s death. Her reunion with Meredith included a particularly memorable elevator scene where she was overcome with grief and memories of their shared past.
I’ll gladly take the one Season 22 episode with Addison Montgomery, particularly if it brings her back together with Amelia.

The current season of Grey’s Anatomy has already welcomed back some familiar faces. Kate Burton reprised her role as Meredith’s mother in a memorable dream sequence, and Kelly McCreary’s character, Maggie Pierce, shared the news of her pregnancy with Meredith and Amelia. Plus, Jesse Williams returned as Jackson Avery, traveling from Boston to help with a challenging medical case.
Grey’s Anatomy resumes at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, January 8, on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.
