Captain America’s Avengers Team Vs. The Thunderbolts: Which Is Stronger In Doomsday?

The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will feature multiple superhero teams, including the Fantastic Four, X-Men, a team called the Thunderbolts/New Avengers, and a new Avengers group led by Sam Wilson. The Thunderbolts and Sam Wilson’s Avengers are already positioned to clash, hinted at by a scene after the credits of Thunderbolts which showed tension between Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes regarding who gets to use the Avengers name.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe prepared for a conflict between two groups of Avengers in Doomsday, fans were curious about which heroes would end up on each side. The lineup for the New Avengers was already established through the films and the official Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement. However, it wasn’t entirely clear who would fight alongside Captain America.

Disney has confirmed the lineup for Captain America’s new Avengers team in the upcoming film Doomsday. Now that we know the six members (revealed so far), it’s easier to see how this team stacks up against the previously established New Avengers.

Comparing The Avengers & Thunderbolts’ Official Rosters In Avengers: Doomsday

Disney has announced the Avengers lineup for the upcoming ‘Doomsday’ film. The team will include Sam Wilson as Captain America, Thor, Loki, Ant-Man (Scott Lang), Shang-Chi, and Joaquín Torres as Falcon. This group brings together three Avengers veterans, a powerful god, a master of mystical martial arts, and another flying hero.

The team lineup for Thunderbolts was revealed in Doomsday. Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine introduces Bucky, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, and Sentry as the new Avengers. We see them together in the New Avengers tower when a spaceship resembling the Fantastic Four’s enters Earth’s atmosphere.

Each team consists of six members, ensuring a balanced matchup in terms of player count. However, the heroes on each side have very different skills and strengths.

Thunderbolts Roster Avengers Roster
Bucky Barnes Sam Wilson/Captain America
Yelena Belova Thor
Bob Reynolds/Sentry Loki
John Walker/U.S. Agent Scott Lang/Ant-Man
Alexei Shosakov/Red Guardian Shang-Chi
Ava Starr/Ghost Joaquín Torres/Falcon

As a movie fan, I’ve always noticed that Captain America’s Avengers team is really interesting because of how different everyone’s powers are. You’ve got Sam Wilson, flying around in his awesome high-tech suit as Falcon, then you have these incredibly powerful beings like Thor and Loki—they’re practically gods! And don’t even get me started on Ant-Man, who can change size, or Shang-Chi, who’s a master of the Ten Rings. It’s a great mix of technology, magic, raw strength, and just so much more. It makes for a really dynamic team!

The Thunderbolts aren’t as overwhelmingly powerful as some teams. While Bucky, John, and Alexei all have enhanced abilities as super soldiers, Yelena relies on her expert fighting skills and standard Black Widow gear. Ghost gained some interesting powers from quantum energy, but even her ability to become intangible or invisible isn’t unlimited.

Adding Sentry to the Thunderbolts dramatically increases the team’s overall power. He already possesses classic superpowers like flight, super strength, speed, and telekinesis, but his true potential—and immense power—is unlocked when his darker half, the Void, emerges. Sentry is the strongest hero on either of the Avengers teams, and is by far the most powerful character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even more so than characters like Loki and Thor.

Captain America’s Avengers Team Is The Stronger Team In Avengers: Doomsday

As a huge Marvel fan, I always thought having Sentry on the New Avengers instantly gave them a power edge over Captain America’s team. Seriously, he could wipe the floor with them all if he wanted to! But the Thunderbolts series introduced this really interesting angle – Bob, the guy inside Sentry, is scared to use his full power again. He’s terrified of losing control and letting the Void, this destructive force within him, take over completely. It adds a lot of depth to his character and makes things way more complicated.

Figuring out which team would win isn’t just about who has the strongest individual. What really counts is the team’s combined strength. While Thor, Loki, and Shang-Chi might not be as powerful as Sentry on their own, together they could give him a real challenge. Plus, each of them is more powerful than any single member of the New Avengers.

I think Captain America and Ant-Man would win against most of the Thunderbolts in a one-on-one fight. Bucky, Yelena, and Ghost would be their toughest opponents. Falcon might be the least experienced, but he could still potentially beat Alexei or John under the right circumstances.

While both teams are incredibly strong, that’s not the whole story. How well they work together and what they can achieve as a unit are also crucial factors in deciding which team will come out on top.

The New Avengers have a slight advantage because they’ve fought together as a team before, but Captain America’s Avengers should quickly learn to coordinate. Several members – like Ant-Man and Thor, Sam and Ant-Man, Thor and Loki, and Sam/Falcon – have teamed up in past Marvel movies, meaning they’ll only need to integrate Shang-Chi, who should fit right in.

Captain America’s team generally plays the role of the heroes. Members like Sam (Falcon), Thor, and Ant-Man are all experienced at saving the world, and even Loki has helped save entire universes. While Shang-Chi and Falcon might be newer to being superheroes, their skill levels are comparable to most of the New Avengers.

Considering everything, I think Captain America’s Avengers team would win against the Thunderbolts if they faced off in Avengers: Doomsday. If the movie actually shows them fighting, we’ll get a definitive answer from Marvel about which team is stronger. Otherwise, it’ll remain a topic for fans to argue about.

I’m definitely siding with Team Cap on this, though I get why someone might choose Team Thunderbolts, especially considering Sentry is on their side.
