I’m so excited to hear Scarlett Johansson might be joining the DC Universe! After spending almost ten years as Black Widow, one of the original Avengers, she really deserves a fantastic new challenge. It was heartbreaking to see Natasha Romanoff go in Avengers: Endgame, and Scarlett herself has said that chapter of her career is closed. I honestly think she’d be amazing in The Batman 2 – she has the talent to pull off some truly iconic roles!
It appears Scarlett Johansson is very close to joining the cast of The Batman 2 in a significant role. Details about her character are still under wraps, but sources suggest she could play a romantic partner for Robert Pattinson’s Batman, a villain, or a character with both sides to her. Here are some ideal characters for Johansson in the new DC film.
10. Poison Ivy

Many fans immediately thought of Poison Ivy when discussing potential castings, and it’s easy to understand why. Johansson would be a natural fit – she not only looks good with red hair, but she’s also proven she can play complex and alluring characters, which perfectly matches Poison Ivy’s personality. She’d be fantastic as Pamela Isley.
As much as I love the realistic, gritty world Matt Reeves built in his Gotham films, the more fantastical side of characters like Poison Ivy feels a little out of place. That said, I think Ivy could actually work really well as a complex character – someone who could be a love interest for Bruce Wayne and a compelling villain. Her history is genuinely tragic, and that kind of darkness fits perfectly with the tone Reeves has established. It’s an interesting idea to consider her filling the role Selina Kyle played.
9. Vicki Vale

Vicki Vale could be a great role for Johansson, as the character has been portrayed in different and compelling ways. Director Matt Reeves recently told Josh Horowitz that the next Batman film will concentrate more on Bruce Wayne’s personal life than his superhero persona. Because of this, giving Bruce a love interest separate from his work as Batman would fit well with the story’s direction.
Vicki could still be heavily involved in solving the central mystery of the film, much like Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane helped bring down Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman. Interestingly, in the Telltale Batman game, Vicki Vale was unmasked as the villain Lady Arkham. Considering Arkham’s importance in The Batman, revealing her as the villain in a sequel would be a surprising and welcome twist.
8. Julie Madison

Though Julie Madison doesn’t appear often in Batman stories, she’s a key figure in the character’s history – a role that would suit an actress like Scarlett Johansson. Madison holds the distinction of being Batman’s first love interest in the comics, first appearing way back in 1939.
I’m really hoping they cast Madison in The Batman 2! I think she could be perfect for showing a different side of Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne – you know, the playboy billionaire side we haven’t really seen yet. In the first movie, Bruce was so focused on being Batman, he barely felt like a person when he wasn’t in the suit. I think someone like Johansson, playing a relaxed character, could really bring out a lighter, more playful side of him and give us a more well-rounded Bruce Wayne.
7. Samantha Vanaver
There’s been talk about which villains might appear in The Batman 2. Many fans are hoping to see the Court of Owls, a secret society that has been controlling Gotham City for centuries. Actress Lena Headey is a popular choice to play Samantha Vanaver, the leader of this mysterious organization.
The Court of Owls has had several leaders, but Vanaver’s portrayal in the Batman vs. Robin animated movie closely matches the characteristics of the role rumored for Ingrid Johansson in The Batman 2. The character had a romantic relationship with Bruce Wayne while secretly being the person in charge of the Court of Owls – a major betrayal!
6. Nora Fries

If Nora Fries appears in a future Batman film, Scarlett Johansson likely won’t play a romantic interest for Bruce Wayne. However, the character would fit well with the current state of Gotham. Since the Riddler flooded the city at the end of The Batman, Mr. Freeze is a perfect villain for the next installment.
Mr. Freeze has the power to transform Gotham City into a frozen landscape, and Batman is determined to understand his motives. Freeze’s story is deeply tragic, centered around his desperate attempt to save his wife, Nora. A powerful actress like Scarlett Johansson could brilliantly portray the heartbreaking reality of Nora’s illness and the lengths Freeze will go to in order to keep her alive.
5. Harley Quinn

It’s true that casting Johansson as Harley Quinn might seem unexpected. However, The Batman already brought Barry Keoghan into the DC universe as the Joker, and he’s likely to return in the next movie. If the Joker can reappear, there’s no reason not to also introduce Harley Quinn.
Johansson has the talent to play Harleen Quinzel, a smart psychiatrist who could get close to Bruce Wayne. However, she’s already been manipulated by the Joker into becoming Harley Quinn. Given the existing relationship between Batman and the Joker, Harley might actually be working to release the villain from captivity. Johansson is a well-known enough actress to take on the role of Harley Quinn.
4. Silver St. Cloud

I’m really hoping the next Batman movie dives deeper into Bruce Wayne as a person, and I think Silver St. Cloud could be the perfect character to help him move past all the darkness he’s been dealing with. She’s one of Gotham’s socialites, but what makes her so interesting is that she actually discovered Batman’s secret identity – that’s a really unique connection in the Batman world, and I think it could be explored beautifully.
When Selina Kyle (St. Cloud) learned Bruce Wayne was Batman, she ended their relationship, unable to cope with constantly fearing for his safety during his crime-fighting activities. This realization causes Bruce to consider giving up being Batman altogether. Their dynamic would be ideal for a sequel to The Batman that centers on Bruce Wayne’s personal life.
3. Talia Al Ghul

It’s unlikely Talia Al Ghul will appear in The Batman 2. James Gunn has announced that Damian Wayne will be the Robin in The Brave and the Bold, the DC Universe’s Batman movie. Because Damian is Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul’s son, this suggests Talia will be a significant character in the DCU going forward.
Even from a storytelling perspective, I wouldn’t dismiss the idea of Scarlett Johansson playing Talia. In the comics, she’s one of Batman’s major love interests, and the story could easily introduce her as a wealthy woman Bruce Wayne falls for—who is later revealed to be the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul and heir to a vast network of assassins. This revelation would be a huge shock to Bruce.
2. Julia Pennyworth

The movie The Batman showed the relationship between Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne and Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth. Given that Serkis is 61 years old, Alfred could easily have a daughter who is around the same age as Pattinson’s Batman – and that’s where Julia Pennyworth comes in. Julia is Alfred’s long-lost daughter, and her appearance at Wayne Manor promises to be interesting.
In The Batman, Alfred already knows Bruce Wayne is Batman and assists him with his crime-fighting. It would be compelling to see the dynamic between them become complicated when Julia enters the picture, especially since Alfred and Bruce had a more business-like relationship in this version of the story. Julia could potentially help them rediscover the close, father-son bond that audiences have always cherished.
1. Phantasm

I think Scarlett Johansson would be perfect – and a really exciting choice – for the role of Andrea Beaumont, also known as Phantasm, in The Batman 2. This character originally appeared in the animated film Batman: The Mask of the Phantasm, where she’s engaged to Bruce Wayne.
When danger closes in on her father, she leaves everything behind to escape with him. Years after his death, she returns seeking revenge, becoming the mysterious Phantasm. This role would be a perfect fit for Scarlett Johansson, letting her utilize the action skills she honed as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but within the DC universe. It would also allow her to portray a complex character with a deeply emotional past, making Phantasm an excellent addition to a potential The Batman 2.
