‘Mortal Kombat II’ Star Lewis Tan Teases More Action-Packed Sequel With Extreme “Fatalities”

Fans of martial arts movies are eagerly anticipating Mortal Kombat II, the next film in the series, which is scheduled for release in 2026. It’s a sequel to the 2021 reboot based on the popular video game. While new characters will be introduced, Lewis Tan will return as Cole Young. Tan has hinted that the movie will feature impressive stunts, improved fight choreography, and the famously brutal finishing moves, known as fatalities. This news has made Mortal Kombat II even more anticipated.

I’ve been following Tan’s interviews for his new movie, Wildcat, and he recently spoke with Comic Book about Mortal Kombat II. He didn’t give away too much, but he did say the sequel is going to be even more action-packed and violent. He explained that while the first Mortal Kombat movie had some good fights, it didn’t quite capture the level of brutality that fans have loved in the games for years.

I actually think this version is more intense. The fights are more brutal, and we’ve had more deaths, but that was intentional. We really wanted to make the combat more intricate and layered. After all, this is Mortal Kombat – we aimed to create the best fight movie of the year, and I believe we succeeded.

‘Mortal Kombat II’ Will Go Heavier on the Gore, as Well as the Action

Warner Bros. Pictures

The latest Mortal Kombat movie came out in 2021, as people were still adjusting to how films were being released after the COVID-19 pandemic. While it did okay in theaters, it wasn’t a huge hit for Warner Bros. However, a sequel was quickly approved, and director Simon McQuoid is returning to direct it.

Those working on Mortal Kombat II plan to build on the first film, improving its weaker areas. Actor Tan says the sequel will be violent, but also more exciting, with lots of action and impressive scenes. They’ve taken lessons from the first movie, where they tried to do too much at once.

I ended up with a lot of bruises and was pretty beat up during filming – you’ll find out why soon! I really enjoy fully immersing myself in the physical aspects of the role and doing as many of the fight scenes as possible. In the second movie, there was only one major stunt I didn’t perform because it was particularly risky. My character does a double backflip and lands on the floor, and that kind of move is just too dangerous for me to attempt. You’re inevitably going to get hit and bumped around during fight choreography, but for me, it’s all worth it.

As a movie fan, I always felt the second film really upped the ante with the action. The first one was good, but it seemed like they were trying to juggle the story and the fight scenes. With the second one, it was all about the tournament, and they just let the action team go. They gave them complete creative freedom with the choreography, the shooting, and especially the editing. When you trust talented people like that, the results are amazing. They weren’t not doing that in the first movie, but I think they were trying to do too much at once. We definitely learned from that experience and applied it to the sequel.
