Despite growing calls for responsible innovation, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is increasingly shaped by the priorities of a few powerful corporations. This paper, ‘Irresponsible AI: big tech’s influence on AI research and associated impacts’, examines how disproportionate corporate influence distorts AI research, exacerbates societal and environmental harms, and undermines genuinely beneficial development. This dual strategy – maximizing profit through AI applications while restricting access to the underlying expertise – creates significant barriers for smaller organizations and independent researchers, effectively concentrating power within a select few and reshaping the landscape of artificial intelligence development.

The advent of deep learning in the early 2010s dramatically reshaped the artificial intelligence landscape, simultaneously fueling innovation and consolidating power within a few key organizations. This particular approach to AI demands substantial computational resources and massive datasets for effective training – costs that proved prohibitive for many independent researchers and smaller companies. Consequently, organizations with pre-existing infrastructure and capital – predominantly large technology firms – gained a decisive advantage. This shift is clearly reflected in authorship trends at leading AI conferences; analysis of publications at ICML and NeurIPS demonstrates a significant increase in author affiliations with Big Tech companies, rising from 13% in 2008/09 to a dominant 47% in 2018/19, signaling a marked centralization of knowledge production and a growing barrier to entry for those outside the established tech giants.

Financial contributions from companies like Google, Meta, and Amazon have often been linked to the prevalence of research aligned with their commercial interests, potentially overshadowing independent or critical work. A more difficult task lies in devising mechanisms to incentivize – or, failing that, compel – genuinely independent research. The notion of ‘scaling’ should be viewed with profound skepticism; larger is not invariably better, particularly when the cost is borne by society and the environment.

Ultimately, the field needs to abandon the pretense of objectivity. Every line of code, every parameter optimized, reflects a value judgment. To ignore the source of that judgment – the interests of those funding the work – is not simply naive; it is intellectually dishonest. The question isn’t whether AI can change the world, but who benefits from that change. And that, it seems, is a question many are afraid to ask.
