Netflix has released The Abandons, a new series filled with classic Western drama – think family feuds, plenty of action, and a powerful female crime gang. It’s exactly the kind of show we love.

The story centers on Fiona Nolan, an Irish woman living in Oregon. Unable to have kids, she adopts four orphans, only to find herself in a conflict with wealthy and influential people who want to force her off her land to mine the silver hidden beneath it.

I’m really excited about this new show! It’s going to explore how organized crime first started in America. The creator, Kurt Sutter – who did Sons of Anarchy – explained that the title, ‘The Abandons,’ comes from a real phrase used back then. It described people who were on the edges of society – orphans, sex workers, the disabled, those born out of wedlock… basically, anyone who was lost and forgotten. He actually said that group of people is his favorite kind of community to write about, which makes the show sound even more compelling!

In 1850s America, Fiona, a deeply religious Irish immigrant, couldn’t have children of her own, so she lovingly raised four orphaned children. Her peaceful life is disrupted when a wealthy and powerful family tries to force her family off their land through sneaky and unfair tactics. Fiona is a strong and intelligent woman, and she refuses to be intimidated.

Okay, so you probably know Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones. That woman was seriously intense! After losing her kids, she really went for the Iron Throne, and things ended pretty tragically for her – she and Jaime were actually crushed when the Red Keep fell. It was a wild ending for them both.

I’m a big fan, and I know her from a bunch of awesome roles! She was fantastic in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles on TV, and she’s been in some really cool movies like 300, The Purge, and Dredd. Seriously, she’s great in everything!

Constance Van Ness – Gillian Anderson

Every frontier-town drama has to have a wealthy baddie, and Constance is The Abandons‘.

What else has Gillian Anderson been in?

Gillian Anderson quickly gained recognition playing the logical FBI agent Dana Scully in The X-Files. She then appeared in several historical dramas, including Bleak House, The Crimson Petal and the White, and Great Expectations. However, she became particularly well-known for her role in the gripping Northern Ireland-based thriller The Fall, and more recently starred in the popular Netflix series Sex Education.

Dahlia Teller – Diana Silvers

Dahlia is Fiona’s older daughter – a bright and lovely young woman. Unfortunately, her intelligence and beauty make her a target in the current world. Luckily, she has a powerful mother, Fiona, who both supports and inspires her.

What else has Diana Silvers been in?

Silvers began her career as a model for Stella McCartney and quickly gained recognition in horror films like Ma and Glass, directed by M. Night Shyamalan. She also had a role in the popular comedy Booksmart. However, she was best known for playing Erin, Steve Carell’s daughter, in the Netflix comedy series Space Force before landing a leading role in The Abandons.

Garret Van Ness – Lucas Till

Like his brother Willem, Garret is quick to anger and often acts impulsively. As the likely heir to the Van Ness estate, he’s just as prone to causing trouble with his conceited and bossy attitude. He can be incredibly frustrating.

Many fans will recognize Lucas Till – he played Travis Brody, Miley Cyrus’ love interest in the Hannah Montana movie. Since then, he’s become known for his role as the young X-Men character Havok in several X-Men films, including First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse. More recently, he starred as MacGyver in the TV reboot for five years.

What else has Michiel Huisman been in?

Michiel Huisman began his career as a member of a boyband, but he’s now widely recognized for his role in Game of Thrones. He played Daario Naharis, Daenerys Targaryen’s love interest, who was ultimately replaced by Jon Snow – a decision many viewers probably understood! Huisman has also starred in the horror series The Haunting of Hill House and the comedic thriller The Flight Attendant alongside Kaley Cuoco.
