Lucasfilm Cancels 1 Highly-Anticipated Star Wars Movie

Another planned Star Wars movie has been cancelled, adding to a growing list of projects Lucasfilm has shelved. Disney’s Lucasfilm has consistently struggled to get its big films made, even going through 18 director changes in recent years. This has led to a nearly seven-year gap in Star Wars films since The Rise of Skywalker, but that will change in May 2026 with the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi, recently told Radio Andy that he’s currently not developing his planned Star Wars trilogy. However, he emphasized that he maintains a good relationship with Lucasfilm and hasn’t ruled out working on future Star Wars projects.

Working on The Last Jedi was the highlight of my career, and I still have a great relationship with everyone at Lucasfilm. We don’t have anything in the works right now, but I’d absolutely love to return to that galaxy if the opportunity arises in the future.

Rian Johnson has been working with Netflix to create two follow-up movies to Knives Out, both featuring Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc. The second film, Wake Up Dead Man, will be released on Netflix this month.

However, Lucasfilm is still hoping to launch a new, successful Star Wars trilogy. They’ve brought on Simon Kinberg, the writer behind the X-Men films, to develop three potential movies that could be Episodes 10, 11, and 12.

Although plans for a trilogy from director Rian Johnson have been put on hold, Lucasfilm is now moving forward with a new Star Wars saga. A new trilogy is reportedly already in production, and director Shawn Levy’s upcoming film, Starfighter, will feature a significant cameo intended to launch the story for its sequels – potentially including a return for Daisy Ridley as Rey.

Lucasfilm is hoping to turn next year’s The Mandalorian & Grogu into a three-movie series, picking up where the Disney+ show left off. But if the film doesn’t do well at the box office, those sequels could be scrapped, just like several other Star Wars movies have been cancelled recently.

The Hunt for Ben Solo

Actor Adam Driver, known for his role as Kylo Ren, was set to star in a new film called The Hunt for Ben Solo, directed by Steven Soderbergh, who’s famous for Ocean’s Eleven. A full script by Scott Z. Burns had been completed, but Disney executives Bob Iger and Alan Bergman ultimately decided to cancel the project.

Reports suggest Disney was unsure how Ben Solo could still be alive after his death in The Rise of Skywalker, which led to the cancellation of a planned Lucasfilm project. Now that details about this project, called The Hunt for Ben Solo, are out, fans have started a campaign to try and get it made, though it’s unlikely to succeed.

Josh Trank’s Boba Fett

Long before Simon Kinberg was chosen to lead a new Star Wars trilogy, he had been developing a standalone Boba Fett movie. Josh Trank, the director of Chronicle, was originally set to direct, but he left the project in 2015. Reports varied, with some saying he wanted to work on different films and others suggesting issues with his Fantastic Four reboot led to his departure.

Boba Fett initially wasn’t a success for Disney, fading in popularity before the release of The Force Awakens. However, the character later got a chance to shine in the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett, though it doesn’t seem likely to return for a second season.

Guillermo del Toro’s Jabba The Hutt

Guillermo del Toro, the acclaimed director of this year’s Frankenstein, had plans for a series about Jabba the Hutt, the famous gangster from Star Wars. The script was to be written by David S. Goyer, known for his work on The Dark Knight.

Plans for a Star Wars movie focusing on Jabba the Hutt were scrapped around 2017, before development really began on the film, which was intended to be similar in style to The Godfather.

Untitled Kevin Feige Movie

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, was preparing to expand into the Star Wars universe with a script written by Michael Waldron, who also penned the popular series Loki and the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The project was ultimately cancelled, possibly because Kevin Feige was already heavily involved with managing the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has stated that no actual development work ever took place on it.

Untitled Benioff & Weiss Movie

When Game of Thrones was at its most popular, the show’s creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, were chosen to develop a new Star Wars trilogy focusing on the history of the Jedi. That project has since been reimagined with a new film from the director of Logan, James Mangold.

The project was cancelled in 2019 because of difficulties with timing. Reports suggest this was due to commitments with their new Netflix agreement and negative reactions to the final season of Game of Thrones, which contributed to their decision to stop working on it.

Untitled J.D. Dillard Movie

In 2020, J. D. Dillard, the director of Devotion, was chosen to write a new Star Wars story. It was later announced that this project would draw inspiration from the 1994 video game TIE Fighter.

In 2022, Dillard told The Wrap that his planned Star Wars project was cancelled, despite his best efforts. Some believe Lucasfilm shelved the idea because it was too similar to Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, which is also currently in limbo.

The Official Status of Every Upcoming Star Wars Movie

It’s common for Star Wars projects to face uncertainty and get cancelled, so even though writer Simon Kinberg is currently developing a new trilogy, it could still be scrapped. This is especially true considering the project has already spent years in development limbo.

Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Love & Thunder, is still developing his own Star Wars film. Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed the project is ongoing and that Lucasfilm is enthusiastic about bringing it to life, according to ScreenRant.

Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman, was originally planning to make a Star Wars movie called Rogue Squadron after The Rise of Skywalker. The project stalled for a few years, but recent reports suggest it’s moving forward again, possibly as a series on Disney+.

Originally planned as a Disney+ show, the Lando Calrissian series is now reportedly being reworked as a movie at Lucasfilm. Donald Glover, who played Lando in Solo, is co-writing the script with his brother and frequent collaborator, Stephen Glover. However, it’s currently unclear whether the project will actually be made.

Star Wars Celebration 2023 revealed plans for three upcoming films that will continue the saga in theaters. These include a movie focused on Rey and a “New Jedi Order,” a crossover event connecting shows and characters from “The Mandalorian” universe led by Dave Filoni, and a project called “Dawn of the Jedi” helmed by James Mangold.

So, there were three movies announced a while back, and they’re technically still happening, but things haven’t really moved forward, and honestly, any of them could get dropped. It’s a bit frustrating! Since then, though, two other projects – a movie following Din Djarin and Grogu from The Mandalorian, and another called Starfighter – have jumped ahead in line. Those are now confirmed for 2026 and 2027, which is exciting, but it does make you wonder about those original announcements.
