The idea of a Doctor ‘regenerating’ into a new form used to be straightforward in Doctor Who, but it’s become increasingly complicated. Since David Tennant’s Doctor created a clone, we’ve seen all sorts of variations – Doctors created by a ‘metacrisis’, mysterious Doctors that aren’t discussed, Doctors linked to the ‘Timeless Child’ reveal, Doctors who reuse old faces, and even Doctors who split into two. Now, after the ending of Doctor Who season 15, we’ve even got companions dressing up as Doctors!
As of right now, Billie Piper is officially listed as the main actor in Doctor Who, following Ncuti Gatwa’s run. However, her character seems to be taking on the form of a previous companion, which is unusual, leaving fans wondering if she’s actually playing the new Sixteenth Doctor, or even the Doctor at all. This has naturally led to speculation about who will be the next permanent Time Lord.
After Billie Piper, Mathew Baynton Should Be Doctor Who

Certain actors naturally seem born to play action heroes, while others have the look of classic villains. Then there are those who instantly make you imagine them as the quirky and brilliant Doctor Who. Mathew Baynton is definitely one of those actors.
Though he’s become famous for Ghosts, Baynton first gained recognition with the comedy group Them There. His work with them includes popular shows like Horrible Histories, Yonderland, Bill, and Ghosts. Ghosts has since been successfully adapted for American audiences.
Baynton is primarily known for comedy, so he’d likely bring a fun and lighthearted energy to the role of the Doctor. He’s skilled at playing characters with funny habits, social clumsiness, and physical comedy – all qualities he’s demonstrated in his most popular work.
I’ve always been impressed by Mathew Baynton’s ability to convincingly play characters from different eras, whether it’s for laughs or something more serious. It strikes me that while the Doctor isn’t always a period role, so many of them – like William Hartnell, Jon Pertwee, Paul McGann, and even Matt Smith – really leaned into that classic, Victorian feel. I think Baynton would be fantastic at creating a Doctor who blends the playful energy of the Second Doctor with the charming silliness we saw from Eleven. He could really capture that sweet spot!
A strong Doctor Who actor needs to be more than just funny; they also need to deliver powerful, dramatic speeches and convincingly portray authority. Luckily, Mathew Baynton is capable of much more than comedy. His performance as a secretive killer in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder showed his dramatic range, even though it was different from the Doctor. And his role playing twins in You, Me and the Apocalypse proved he can easily switch between lighthearted and serious moments, demonstrating his versatility.
When Could We Actually See Mathew Baynton As The Doctor?

It’s still unknown when a new actor will be cast as Doctor Who. The next episode, a Christmas special, is scheduled for December 2026 and will likely star Billie Piper as the Doctor. While the BBC has confirmed a full series will follow, they haven’t said whether Piper will continue in the role beyond the special.
Considering Billie Piper’s previous role as Rose Tyler, it’s unlikely she’ll be the Doctor for an extended period. She’s probably filling in temporarily over the Christmas holidays before a permanent Doctor takes over. This means we might not see a new Doctor – whether it’s Baynton or someone else – until after the 2026 Christmas special, after Piper’s character regenerates, if the regeneration happens as usual.
There’s still plenty of time – over a year – for Russell T Davies and the BBC to find the next Doctor and figure out their plans. Since the BBC has already worked with Simon Baynton on shows like Horrible Histories and Ghosts, he’d be an easy person to contact about the role of the Doctor.
