America feasted on NFL football this past Thanksgiving.
Thursday’s NFL game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Kansas City Chiefs broke several viewership records, becoming the most-watched regular season NFL game ever. An average of 57.2 million people tuned in to watch the Cowboys win 31-28 on CBS, according to Nielsen ratings.
The latest viewership numbers exceeded the 42 million who tuned in to watch the Dallas Cowboys play the New York Giants on Thanksgiving 2022, a game broadcast on Fox.

ESPN is taking over the NFL Red Zone and NFL Network channels as part of a new agreement where the NFL will also become a part-owner of ESPN.
Fox reported record viewership for the early Thanksgiving game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. An average of 47.1 million people watched the Packers win the NFC North matchup, 31-24.
Viewership numbers for NBC’s prime-time football game, where Joe Burrow played for the first time in a while, will be available this Thursday. Burrow led the Cincinnati Bengals to a surprising 32-14 win against the Baltimore Ravens.
The NFL is seeing higher viewership numbers thanks to changes in how Nielsen measures audiences. Nielsen now includes viewing on phones, tablets, and streaming devices, as well as fans watching at bars and restaurants, which is especially important for live sports like football.
Heading into the Thanksgiving weekend, NFL games were drawing an average of 17.7 million viewers – a 6% increase over last year and the best numbers since 2015. “Thursday Night Football,” now streamed on Prime Video, is also performing well, averaging 14.85 million viewers – a 12% jump from last year.
The NFL is currently the most-watched television content by a significant margin. Nielsen data shows that NFL games have accounted for 48 of the 50 most popular TV broadcasts since the season began.
As a huge football fan, I’m telling you, the recent ratings are seriously impressive. They’re giving the NFL a lot of leverage when they start talking to networks and streaming services about new broadcast deals. Basically, the games are doing so well, the NFL is in a really strong position to negotiate a better deal.
As a huge NFL fan, I’ve been following the news about their current TV deal. Apparently, the league could break the contract after the 2029-30 season, but from what I understand, Commissioner Goodell is already thinking about talking about a new deal even before then. It sounds like they might want to revisit things sooner rather than later, which is interesting!
The contract currently pays the league $111 billion over its term.
