Stephen Graham’s “gritty” returning period drama branded “absolutely epic” unveils new trailer

The official trailer is out for season two of the popular drama A Thousand Blows, starring Stephen Graham. New episodes will arrive early next year. Erin Doherty and Malachi Kirby also feature in the series, which was created by Steven Knight, the writer behind Peaky Blinders.

The second series, consisting of six episodes, will continue the story a year after the events of the first. Boxer Hezekiah (played by Kirby) is struggling and a far cry from his former self, and boxing promoter Sugar (Graham) is battling personal demons, isolated from his family and increasingly reliant on alcohol.

With Wapping on the verge of collapse, Mary Carr returns with her trusted ally, Alice Diamond, to gather her crew and take back control.

Mary’s at it again – she always has some scheme brewing, and this one’s going to pull in everyone I care about. Honestly, it feels way more dangerous than anything she’s tried before. I’m seriously worried about what’s going to happen.

Emmy winner Anna Doherty stars as Mary, and Darci Shaw plays Alice. Ned Dennehy and Catherine McCormack are also joining the cast for the upcoming season.

In the trailer, Mary announces she’s reuniting the Forty Elephants gang. She declares they’re done working for a rival boss and asks Sugar to help them regain their former power and influence.

The Forty Elephants, a notorious all-female gang led by Mary, were shoplifters who operated in 1880s London and also became involved in conflicts with bare-knuckle boxers.

“It’s the dawn of a new era,” she promises at the trailer’s climax.

Hezekiah, a character in Kirby’s game, is driven by a desire for revenge after his brother’s death, and he’s facing dangerous enemies along the way.

The show has been very well-received, earning an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics agree that A Thousand Blows is a gripping and gritty take on a fascinating period in British history, thanks to creator Steven Knight’s unique style – it’s truly captivating entertainment.

Viewers on IMDb generally like the show, giving it a score of 7.3. One viewer compared it favorably to Peaky Blinders, saying it’s equally well-written and completely addictive – once you start, you won’t want to stop watching.

Another praised it as “a gritty, authentic period drama with Stephen Graham at his best”.

Season 2 of A Thousand Blows will begin streaming on Disney+ on January 9, 2026. You can currently watch the first season on Disney+.
