Sabrina Carpenter is known for being playful and a little bit daring, especially in her songs and performances, which often hint at mature themes. While many fans enjoy this side of her – moments like her “Juno” poses have become popular online – some people find it unsettling. Carpenter is now discussing this reaction, and how her history as a child actor might be shaping how the public perceives her and her music now.
Before Sabrina Carpenter became known for songs like “Manchild” and “Tears,” and before discussions about her performances, she got her start on the Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World from 2014 to 2017. That show launched her career when she was around 15 years old. Now 26, Carpenter recently told Variety that some people still see her as the young actress from that show, and that perception might influence how they react to her current work. She went on to explain:
It’s tough because for some, I’m still seen as the person I was when I was younger. But I can’t change that, and it’s frustrating that starting my career at a young age seems to be holding me back from growing and changing now.
Carpenter started acting at age 12 with a guest appearance on Law & Order: SVU in 2011. She’s been steadily working ever since, and her music career has really gained momentum recently. She’s also acknowledged that some people might find it strange to see her mature and change over time.
It seems she’s prioritizing what her fans think. Public relations professionals have pointed out that her more adult music and performances aren’t a letdown to younger fans, but a way to connect as they mature. Carpenter herself has said she wants to support her fans as they grow up and create a safe space to discuss difficult or sensitive topics they might otherwise avoid.
I used to believe I’d fully understand and explore my sexuality when I became an adult, but I realize now I wasn’t even sure what that meant. It seems like a lot of people don’t. I wish we’d talked more openly about these things when I was younger, but it’s often a topic people are afraid to discuss.
The singer of “Espresso” has spoken about this before, saying her music isn’t meant to upset anyone. She’s also shared how much joy she sees from fans passionately singing along at her shows. Ultimately, she’s made it clear it’s all about having a good time, telling CBS Mornings that “It’s just fun, and that’s all it needs to be.”
Ultimately, she expressed that she wants people to enjoy her work – to listen and dance if they do. But she’s also perfectly okay if not everyone connects with it. She understands her own limits and what she’s comfortable with, and that’s the most important thing to her, as she put it.
People often assume I’ll do whatever it takes, but that’s not true. I actually have personal limits – it might surprise you! I’m simply living my life openly, and you’re observing. If that doesn’t appeal to you, that’s okay. But if you enjoy it, let’s connect.
Despite ongoing criticism, Carpenter has responded with playful defiance. After the release of her controversial Man’s Best Friend cover, she quickly followed up with alternative versions jokingly labeled “approved by God,” acknowledging and responding to the public’s reactions.
I understand Carpenter’s perspective. Having been famous for so long, many people have watched her mature, and some connect with her music because of that shared experience. Others might still see her as the young performer from her Disney Channel days, and that can be a hurdle. Regardless, Sabrina Carpenter is now an adult artist creating the music she wants.
