“Absorbing” supernatural mystery series with “genuine twists” jumps up Netflix’s UK chart

The new supernatural mystery series, Talamasca: The Secret Order, is quickly becoming popular on Netflix UK after being added this week. Based on the novels by Anne Rice – including The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches – the show follows a young lawyer who is chosen to join a hidden organization.

Since it became available on the streaming service on Monday, Talamasca has quickly become popular in the UK, currently ranking as the fourth most-watched series.

The series stars Nicholas Denton, known from Dangerous Liaisons, and follows Guy Anatole, a newly qualified lawyer. He’s recruited by a leader within the Talamasca, a group dedicated to monitoring the supernatural world.

But Nicholas quickly discovers his true mission: to infiltrate Talamasca’s London headquarters and identify a potential threat – someone who could destroy the organization and endanger the world.

Currently, the show has a 64% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 22 reviews. IGN called it a captivating story that blends the mysterious world of the Talamasca with the excitement of a spy thriller, adding a supernatural element.

According to Slate, the six-episode Talamasca series is well-paced and includes a couple of surprising plot twists, which is rare for adaptations of Anne Rice’s novels.

Both Geek Girl Authority and Decider found the show somewhat flawed but with promise. Geek Girl Authority thought it wasn’t fully realized yet but could improve, while Decider said it’s enjoyable enough for fans of Anne Rice, though newcomers might find the plot confusing.

According to Bloody Disgusting, viewers who get past the slow start will likely find a lot to enjoy. The publication believes Talamasca: The Secret Order has the potential to be a key element in the larger Immortal Universe, if developed well.

Joining Denton in the cast of Talamasca are Elizabeth McGovern, known for Downton Abbey, Céline Buckens from Suspect, Maisie Richardson-Sellers of The Originals, and William Fichtner, famous for Prison Break.

Talamasca: The Secret Order is streaming now on Netflix in the UK, and AMC in the US.
