HBO’s First Green Lantern Show Trailer Teases Two Major Heroes For The DCU That Nobody Expected

A trailer for HBO’s upcoming Green Lantern series, titled Lanterns, recently debuted, and it hints at the possible appearance of two surprising heroes when the show releases in late summer 2026. The trailer was shown at an HBO event while fans await further details about the series.

At a recent HBO Max event in Brazil on November 25th, Omelete shared details from the trailer for the upcoming series, Lanterns. The footage highlighted Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the two main Green Lanterns in the show. The trailer also hinted at the appearance of two other Green Lanterns, and showed that Hal and John don’t necessarily agree on everything.

Two Green Lanterns Might Have Been Teased By DC’s First Lanterns Trailer

The trailer for the upcoming series Lanterns surprised fans with a twist regarding Hal Jordan. Although DC previously stated Hal would be mentoring John Stewart, the trailer clarifies he’s actually a substitute trainer, stepping in for someone still unknown. Kilowog is a strong candidate for who John originally trained with.

Kilowog is widely considered the main trainer for new Green Lanterns, making him a natural choice to mentor John Stewart. While Katma Tui also trained Stewart in the Justice League cartoon, Kilowog’s larger presence in DC Comics makes him a more suitable teacher.

The initial trailer for the upcoming Green Lantern series hinted at a surprising character: a squirrel who is also a Green Lantern! Before the release of James Gunn’s Superman movie, fans noticed something in set photos that led them to believe a squirrel Green Lantern might appear. It turned out the squirrel was simply an animal Superman rescued. Now, the series could be introducing Ch’p, a well-known squirrel Green Lantern from the comics, who was later replaced by B’dg.

Why The Two Green Lanterns Would Be Surprising For The DC Universe TV Show

It makes sense to include other Green Lanterns in the HBO series, but Kilowog and Ch’p might be surprising choices. The show aims for a more realistic and down-to-earth tone than typical Green Lantern stories. It’s being developed with a similar feel to HBO’s True Detective, focusing on a gritty mystery happening on Earth.

I’m hearing the trailer is really leaning into a Western vibe, which makes sense given what we know about the story. Honestly, I was a little worried about seeing Kilowog and Ch’p – they’re so reliant on special effects and feel very ‘space opera,’ and might not fit that tone. But even if they don’t show up much, I’m happy they’ve at least hinted at those characters! And the fact that Guy Gardner and Sinestro are definitely going to be in it more than makes up for any other Lanterns we might not see as much of.
