BBC’s “luminous adaptation” of a period classic with Maya Hawke lands new UK streaming home

I was so excited to hear that the BBC’s Little Women series – the one with Maya Hawke from Stranger Things – is now available to stream in the UK! It’s a really beautiful take on the classic Louisa May Alcott story, following the lives of the March sisters as they navigate growing up after the Civil War in Massachusetts. It’s set in the 1860s, and honestly, it’s a must-watch if you’re a fan of the book or just good period dramas.

Little Women tells the story of the March sisters and their mother, Marmee, as they navigate a Christmas season without gifts or their father’s presence. The girls are challenged to embrace a life of simplicity and humility while dealing with difficult circumstances.

Vanessa Caswill directed the series, which features Hawke alongside Emily Watson, Angela Lansbury, Willa Fitzgerald, Kathryn Newton, Annes Elwy, Jonah Hauer-King, and the late Michael Gambon.

The three-part adaptation of Little Women, which originally aired on BBC One on Boxing Day 2017, is now available to stream on ITVX in the UK.

The miniseries has received positive reviews, earning an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 37 reviews. Critics particularly highlighted the strong performances from the young actors.

According to Newsday, the adaptation is beautifully radiant, and Ethan Hawke’s portrayal of Jo is particularly memorable, standing out among many excellent interpretations of the character.

I thought the acting was really great, especially Emily Watson as Marmee – she was so moving! But honestly, Maya Hawke completely stole the show as Jo. She perfectly captured Jo’s energy and showed how she blossomed into a serious writer and someone who wasn’t afraid to be herself in love. That’s what The Boston Globe said, and I totally agree!

According to The Daily Telegraph, Little Women is a charming and heartfelt adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1869 novel, making the March sisters feel both fresh and familiar.

According to IndieWire, this production is both beautifully made and stays true to the source material. They also note that the series successfully conveys the novel’s uplifting energy, even with its sadder moments.

Decider praised the show, calling it a delightful and family-friendly experience that adds emotional depth to well-known characters and recommending viewers watch it.

While many praised the new adaptation of Little Women, not all critics were impressed. The Independent pointed out that simply having talented actors, well-known names, and a large budget doesn’t guarantee a successful film, except perhaps when it comes to the visual aspects.

Little Women is now streaming on ITVX.
