If you’ve missed seeing Kevin Costner on TV, his new project comes out December 9th. He recently gained a new following playing John Dutton, the strong and silent family leader, in the hit show Yellowstone. However, Costner unexpectedly left Yellowstone before it finished, causing some controversy and leaving the fifth season unfinished.
The way Yellowstone dealt with Kevin Costner leaving the show ultimately hurt its reputation. While the Yellowstone universe will continue with several new shows, many fans have been hoping to see Costner return to television, and they’ll finally get that next week.
Kevin Costner Returns To TV For An ABC Christmas Special On December 9

Kevin Costner, best known as John Dutton from Yellowstone, will host a Christmas special called Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas on ABC. The two-hour show, airing on Tuesday, December 9th at 8 PM Eastern Time, tells the story of Mary, Joseph, and the birth of Jesus, with Costner as the host.
Kevin Costner recently told People magazine that his new Christmas special explores the familiar story of Christmas. He explained that everyone has a different level of knowledge about the holiday – some know it well, others only a little, and some are believers while others are skeptics. He hopes the special will reveal the true story behind the tradition and appeal to everyone, even those who are simply curious.
ABC kicked off its holiday programming with a lineup of festive specials starting on Thanksgiving weekend and continuing throughout December. Highlights include the Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade, plus holiday episodes of popular shows like Shifting Gears and Abbott Elementary. Classic holiday movies such as The Sound of Music and Home Alone will also be shown.
Kevin Costner Has Mostly Focused On Movie Projects After Leaving Yellowstone

Although Yellowstone might be Kevin Costner’s final TV role, he’s far from retired. In fact, he left the show specifically to dedicate himself to creating his own large-scale Western film, Horizon: An American Saga.
Kevin Costner’s ambitious film series, Horizon, will consist of at least four movies, all directed by and starring him. These films chronicle the story of the American West, both before and after the Civil War, and each is planned to be around three hours long. The first installment, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, was released in theaters on June 28, 2024, following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
The initial Horizon film didn’t do well with either critics or audiences. It received a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and didn’t earn much at the box office.
The first film in the series, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, earned $38.8 million worldwide. While Chapter 2 is finished and premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2024, its release has been postponed indefinitely because the first film didn’t perform well at the box office.
Filming for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3 began in May 2024, but was temporarily paused because of funding issues. However, Danny Huston, an actor in the film, recently told ScreenRant in June 2025 that a significant portion of Chapter 3 has already been filmed. This suggests that Kevin Costner is likely to complete the third movie in the series.
Things have been tough financially for Chapter 4, that’s for sure, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Costner. As Huston put it, you just can’t stop him! He’s absolutely incredible, and seeing his vision for this film come to life is truly spectacular. It’s amazing what he’s accomplishing.
Although the fate of Horizon: An American Saga is still unknown, Kevin Costner will return to television on December 9th with Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas, which he will host.
