Like Chris Hemsworth, Zac Efron Is Landing His Forever Home In Byron Bay, And It’s Coming With One Surprising Feature

Zac Efron is officially planning to build a permanent home near Byron Bay, Australia. Following in the footsteps of Chris Hemsworth, Efron moved to Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been traveling back and forth ever since, working on projects like Down To Earth With Zac Efron and Gold. He’s now decided to build a house from scratch, and it will include one unexpected addition.

Zac Efron is once again taking it upon himself to lead by example when it comes to climate friendly practices, and this new house might just be his biggest investment yet. The Firestarter actor has enlisted the help of environmental activist Joost Bakker. According to Bakker’s Instagram, the two plan to build Efron’s home out of mainly hemp plant and oyster shells. Yes, I’m completely serious. Take a look:

In 2020, actor Zac Efron sold his house in Los Angeles and purchased a property near Byron Bay, Australia. After briefly living in a van, he’s now building a permanent home with a unique twist. According to builder Ben Bakker, the house will be constructed using materials largely derived from the cannabis plant – including walls, insulation, rugs, curtains, and even mattresses. It’s a truly innovative approach to sustainable living!

You might be wondering why Zac Efron chose hemp for his home project. He told an Australian environmentalist he wanted the healthiest house possible, and industrial hemp is a rapidly growing, carbon-neutral plant perfect for building. For this “greenhouse,” the team is going even further – they’re using oyster shells instead of lime to create the hemp bricks, which avoids the need for mining.

After Australia changed its laws in 2017 to permit industrial hemp farming, Joost Bakker has become a key figure in building with this plant. Bakker’s eco-friendly, self-sufficient home was showcased on Season 2, Episode 4 of Zac Efron’s documentary series, Down To Earth. It was likely through this episode that Efron was inspired to build his own sustainable home, with Bakker’s guidance.

The Netflix series Down To Earth follows actor Zac Efron and superfood expert Darin Olien as they travel the world, exploring sustainable and healthy living practices. The second season, called Down Under, specifically focused on Australia, where Efron had been living while not filming.

Someone should really suggest this to Netflix: a documentary series following the construction of Zac Efron’s greenhouse would be a great fit for a third season of Down to Earth. The building isn’t scheduled to begin until February 2026, with an estimated completion date of September next year, so there’s still time to get the project approved!

Zac Efron is currently back in Los Angeles before moving on to his next project. He’s been supporting his brother on Season 34 of Dancing With The Stars and filming a new thriller called Famous with Phoebe Dynevor, known for Bridgerton. The movie, produced by A24, is currently slated for release in 2026.
