Kelly Clarkson recently posted a sweet but rare photo of her children, who are still coping with the loss of their father, Brandon Blackstock, who passed away unexpectedly four months ago.

The 43-year-old singer shared a heartwarming picture over the weekend of her children, 11-year-old River Rose and 9-year-old Remington, ice skating at Rockefeller Center in New York City.

She shared a sweet photo of her family ice skating at Rockefeller Center, captioning it, ‘Ice skating at 30 Rock with the family.’ The kids were all smiles, cozy in their winter coats and hats.

The former American Idol winner spent time enjoying a beloved New York City winter activity with her children and another adult, who wasn’t publicly identified.

The family’s cheerful time together follows the recent and sad loss of Blackstock, who died at 48 after a three-year fight with melanoma, as shared in his obituary from Butte Funeral Home. He was described as brave and courageous throughout his illness.

The obituary surprisingly shared that he was romantically involved with a former assistant of Clarkson before he passed away.

Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock first connected in 2006, but they didn’t start dating until 2012. They then got married in a small, private ceremony at Blackberry Farms in Tennessee the next year.

The couple had two children, River, born in 2014, and Remington, born in 2016. In 2020, Clarkson filed for divorce, stating they had differences that couldn’t be resolved.

The split was finalized two years later.

During a 2023 interview on the IRL podcast with Angie Martinez, the celebrity shared that dealing with their difficult breakup while in the public eye was tough.

Divorce is really tough, and it’s even harder when it’s public because people assume they understand everything that happened. The most difficult part is that it wasn’t a quick decision – it took a long time to reach that point.

She added that she had desperately wanted their marriage to work.

I was aiming for something really beautiful and impressive, but it doesn’t always work out that way,” Clarkson said.

She also talked about how she and her ex-husband, Blackstock, are co-parenting their children, and how the kids are adjusting to the separation.

After their breakup, the former couple ended up in a lengthy court battle regarding sales commissions. Clarkson claimed her ex-partner had made business deals without her permission.

They reached a settlement in May 2024, finally ending the contentious battle. 

She shared that she asks her children every night, while cuddling them at bedtime, if they’re happy and, if not, what would improve their mood.

Clarkson said her children were very open about wanting both parents to live with them.

She told him she understood what he was going through, sharing that she also came from a divorced family. She acknowledged it was difficult, but reassured him that his parents would work things out and that they both loved him very much.

After hearing about his passing, a source revealed to People that Clarkson continued to care about her ex-husband when she learned he was ill, prioritizing their children’s well-being.

According to a source, Kelly has always prioritized maintaining a sense of dignity and grace. It became apparent earlier this year that Brandon was struggling, and she is heartbroken for their children.

The divorce was really hard on her – it was a complicated, painful experience that she deeply regretted. However, her priority was always ensuring her children had a good relationship with their father, and she consistently avoided speaking negatively about Brandon to them.
