Look, I’ve been hearing some chatter about James Gunn casting actors from his Guardians of the Galaxy movies in his new DCU projects, and people seem upset. But honestly, if you want to see a pattern, you need to go way back! Anyone surprised by this should check out his 2006 horror film – it’s delightfully gruesome, and it proves he’s been ‘re-casting’ favorites for a long time. And good news for those who haven’t seen it: Tubi is adding it to their free streaming library on December 1st. Trust me, it’s a blast!
Slither is a deliberately disgusting horror-comedy, clearly inspired by the low-budget, over-the-top style of films from Troma Studios. It’s designed to be both funny and shocking, but it’s not for the faint of heart. The film also features Nathan Fillion and Michael Rooker, two actors who frequently appear in director James Gunn’s projects over the past quarter-century. Here’s what the movie is about:
Wheelsy is a quiet, uneventful town where people mostly keep to themselves. When farm animals are found brutally killed and a woman disappears, Sheriff Bill Pardy (Fillion) uncovers a dangerous alien creature that could destroy all life on Earth.
I’ve always loved James Gunn’s work, and it’s wild to think about where he started! Before he was running DC Studios, he was cutting his teeth at Troma Studios, learning from the master of practical effects, Lloyd Kaufman. That early experience really shaped his style – think classic horror like John Carpenter’s The Thing or The Blob, even something as bizarre as Society. With Slither, he truly got to indulge in that love of gooey, over-the-top horror, and honestly, it totally worked. It’s a fantastic movie that shows off everything he learned in those early days.
‘Slither’ was a Critical Success but a Box Office Flop

Universal
James Gunn achieved huge success with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but his start at DC Studios has been challenging. The recent Superman movie, while earning about $616 million worldwide, was generally considered a letdown.
Despite positive reviews – critics gave Slither an 87% rating – the movie wasn’t successful at the box office, earning only $12.9 million against a $15 million budget. Audiences seemed to agree, giving it a 63% score. However, nearly 20 years later, Slither has gained a dedicated cult following, proving that a movie’s initial financial performance doesn’t always determine its long-term appeal and that even flops can find an audience.
The film will be available on Tubi in December, giving both longtime fans and new viewers a chance to experience its unsettling thrills. With James Gunn heavily involved in writing and directing several DC Universe projects, it seems improbable he’ll return to making non-comic book movies anytime soon. But when he does, those who enjoyed films like Slither will be thrilled.
