Welcome to Derry Finally Fixed Fans’ Most Hated Character (& It’s About Time)

Episode 6 of It: Welcome to Derry, titled “In the Name of the Father,” is a thrilling installment that uncovers more about Ingrid Kersh and her family. It also introduces the dangerous Black Spot event, which will be central to the next episode. Beyond that, the episode does a great job of fleshing out another character, giving them more depth and personality.

Marge Truman first met Lilly Bainbridge when Lilly was grieving her father’s death. However, as Lilly deals with the trauma of her classmates being murdered, Marge struggles to connect with her and instead falls in with the popular, and often unkind, group known as The Pattycakes. While many viewers initially disliked Marge, the latest episode, number six, offers a new perspective on her character.

Marge Turned on Lilly, But Reunited Before Confronting Pennywise

The show introduced Lilly Bainbridge, Teddy Uris, and Phil Malkin, who seemed to be the equivalent of the Losers’ Club. They started looking into their friend Matty’s disappearance, and soon It began attacking them. While investigating at the movie theater, Teddy, Phil, and Phil’s sister, Susie, were killed. Only Lilly survived, as Ronnie managed to save her.

Honestly, it’s completely understandable that Lilly’s reeling after everything that’s happened, especially while she’s still grieving her dad. It just breaks my heart to see her start to pull away. And it’s tough, because Marge, bless her heart, just doesn’t get it. She wants things to go back to normal, including being friends with Lilly, but Lilly’s headspace is totally different now. Marge is really focused on getting into this clique, The Pattycakes – these three girls who seem super rich and stuck-up. But Lilly honestly couldn’t care less about them or being popular, and that just creates this huge rift between them and unfortunately, makes Lilly a target.

Desperate to fit in with The Pattycakes, Marge agrees to a cruel prank on Lilly. But she feels guilty and starts to confess what’s happening. Suddenly, she has a terrifying hallucination – she thinks her eyes are bulging like a snail’s. In a moment of panic, she tries to cut her own eye, but Lilly manages to stop her before she gets seriously hurt.

Marge begins to understand what Lilly and her friends have been going through, and decides to help them. She bravely goes with them, even into the sewers, to face Pennywise, and develops a strong friendship with her classmate, Rich Santos. The injury to her eyes was the first step in Marge finally changing her life for the better.

Viewers of the first four episodes of Welcome to Derry haven’t been impressed with Marge, often describing her as irritating, scheming, and difficult to like. Many found her decision to betray Lilly in an attempt to be popular predictable and unhelpful, with some even celebrating when she faced consequences. However, episode five presented a more sympathetic side to her character, and the latest episode further develops this change, significantly improving how viewers perceive her and Rich.

Marge and Rich Take Center Stage in Welcome to Derry Episode 6

In the latest episode, Marge is still recovering from an injury to her eye, which is bandaged. She and Rich become closer when he helps her change the bandage. Meanwhile, Marge becomes the center of attention at school, and the Pattycakes try to befriend her, hoping to gain some popularity by association.

She pretended to think about their offer, but then dramatically pulled off her bandage, revealing her eye to shock them. She confidently declared herself a “freak,” which Rich seemed to genuinely admire. Afterwards, they went to The Black Spot to find Ronnie, who was in hiding with her father, Hank Grogan – a man accused of murder.

Despite some playful adult moments with dancing and drinking at The Black Spot, the scenes with Marge and Rich are surprisingly sweet and innocent. They capture the simple joy of childhood and the blossoming of first crushes. While these aren’t the typical scenes fans expect from IT, they’re a good reminder that at its heart, Stephen King’s story is both a horror and a story about growing up.

It’s wonderful to see Marge finally getting the spotlight after being overlooked for so long. Her connection with Rich is fantastic, their conversations are sharp and funny, and she’s embracing her true self. Plus, her unwavering support for Ronnie adds a lot to her development. Marge’s charming and unique personality really shines through, making every scene with Rich a joy to watch.

Things are about to get difficult for Marge, Rich, and Ronnie. They’re at The Black Spot when a group of self-appointed do-gooders arrives, hinting at trouble. The bar has a troubled past – it was previously destroyed by a white supremacist group. This time, the group is searching for Hank Grogan, though it’s apparent some of them still hold racist beliefs. An anonymous woman, probably Ingrid Kersh, gave them the tip.

Is Marge Richie Tozier’s Mom?

Even though terrible things happen, many families continue to live in Derry because people tend to forget the frightening events that repeat every 27 years. This darkness seems to settle over the town like a thick fog, and after a while, adults become used to it and accept it as normal. That’s why it’s not uncommon for people who survived supernatural horrors as children to then raise their own families there.

Fans have speculated about Marge’s backstory, wondering if she might be a character who remained in Derry and had a family. This theory is fueled by her prominent glasses, leading some to believe she could be the mother of future characters. Director Andy Muschietti recently told TVLine that there’s a specific reason for her thick glasses, which won’t be revealed until the final episode she appears in, and that her fear is connected to eyes.

Richie’s mother is Margaret Tozier, though everyone calls her Maggie. She may have also been called Marge when she was younger. Given Richie’s last name isn’t Tozier, it’s possible she considered naming her son after a friend from her past.

The name ‘Richie’ suggests a connection to the character Rich, and given the dangerous situation at The Black Spot in the last episode – with vigilantes closing in – some fans worry Rich might die. It’s possible Marge named her son in memory of a friend who passed away. We’ll find out if this is true soon, as the next episode is called “The Black Spot.”

It: Welcome to Derry airs every Sunday on HBO, leading up to the season finale on December 14.
