Call the Midwife boss has “constant” offers from streaming services – but would she leave the BBC?

Heidi Thomas, the writer behind the popular show Call the Midwife, has said she’s been approached by streaming services like Netflix with many attractive job offers, but she’s currently committed to the BBC.

During a recent press conference, Thomas, who has led Call The Midwife since 2012, explained why he wouldn’t leave the show. He questioned, “Why would I risk leaving something successful for an uncertain opportunity?”

Look, I’ve always been full of ideas, and I’m lucky enough to work with incredibly talented people who can really bring them to life. This job… it’s been my life’s work, honestly. I’ve spent years doing it, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I’m deeply grateful to have been able to share stories about diverse people – women, working-class individuals, people with disabilities, and those new to the country – and collaborate with other women in the process. It’s a real privilege.

What you see on streams isn’t always real or lasting. It’s often fleeting and disappears quickly, like a burst of fireworks.

Thomas remarked that Call the Midwife is a consistently strong show. He explained, “We created it from the very beginning, and there are plenty more stories to tell.”

When asked about the financial benefits of collaborating with streamers, Thomas explained that it wasn’t about the money, but rather shared principles and beliefs.

Being a BBC show is fantastic because they provide a good budget, and we make sure every single dollar goes directly into making the show the best it can be.

I believe that’s exactly how it should be. We always feel short on time and resources, but that limitation can actually be valuable. It forces you to be deliberate and put real thought into everything you do, both in front of and behind the camera. You can’t really put a price on that level of care and consideration.

By 2025, Call the Midwife had aired for 14 seasons, and a fifteenth is planned for 2026. Fans can also look forward to a two-part Christmas special next month.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
