8 Classic Fantasy Movies Too Perfect to Ever Remake

People love escaping into fantastical worlds filled with magic, heroes, and creatures, and that passion hasn’t faded despite the countless movies already made. Fantasy has been a popular genre in film since the 1930s, and it looks like we’re entering a new era with fresh takes on classic stories like The Chronicles of Narnia and Highlander coming soon.

Hollywood is constantly revisiting older films with reboots, but some fantasy movies are so good they shouldn’t be remade. Whether it’s charming, self-contained fairy tales or grand, unforgettable epics, these films have already reached perfection and don’t need updating.

The Wizard of Oz Has Room for New Stories, But No Remakes

The Wizard of Oz is a classic film, and for good reason. Based on L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the 1939 movie tells the story of Dorothy Gale’s journey through the fantastical land of Oz. She’s joined by a lovable group of friends: a silly Scarecrow, a Tin Man who longs for a heart, and a Lion who struggles with courage.

Released almost ninety years ago, The Wizard of Oz remains a beloved classic, and is notable as one of the first movies filmed in Technicolor.

The story of Oz has been retold many times, from Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful to the Broadway hit Wicked. Despite all these adaptations, no one has ever attempted to remake the classic 1939 film. And truthfully, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for any filmmaker to recreate the original’s unique charm and sense of wonder.

With popular stories like Wicked offering new perspectives on classic tales, the original story of The Wizard of Oz can never be seen in quite the same light again.

Labyrinth Can Never Be Replicated

Released in 1986, Labyrinth is a movie that people either loved or found quite scary as children. It tells the story of young Sarah Williams (Jennifer Connelly) who journeys into the dangerous and magical Labyrinth to save her baby brother. Along the way, she faces challenges from the intimidating Goblin King, Jareth, played by David Bowie.

Labyrinth is a truly unique movie that couldn’t be recreated today. A lot of its magic comes from David Bowie, who is unforgettable in the 1986 film, and a remake would inevitably fall short. Even plans for a sequel seem misguided.

Labyrinth exists best as it is today and doesn’t need any additional entries or reboots.

The NeverEnding Story Is Too Nostalgic for a Remake

As a huge fantasy fan, I absolutely love The NeverEnding Story. It’s based on Michael Ende’s amazing book and takes you to this incredible place called Fantasia. The story follows a boy who ends up being the only hope for Fantasia when this terrifying force, called the Nothing, starts to destroy everything. It was a massive hit when it came out in 1984, and it’s cool how it spawned a whole series of sequels and even a TV show!

Even though The NeverEnding Story might seem a little old-fashioned now, it’s still packed with memorable scenes that have made the story so popular for generations. Characters like Falkor the Dragon and Bastian Bux remain fan favorites, more than forty years after the movie first came out.

It’s best to leave The NeverEnding Story untouched; any attempt to remake it would likely fall short of the original’s impact on audiences.

Spirited Away Is a Nearly Perfect Movie

Studio Ghibli is known for its fantastical stories, and the 2001 film Spirited Away is a prime example. The movie tells the story of Chihiro, whose parents are magically turned into pigs by the wicked witch Yubaba. To save them and return things to normal, Chihiro bravely enters the spirit world and must overcome Yubaba. Spirited Away is considered a timeless classic and won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

With so many classic animated movies being turned into live-action films these days, Spirited Away should remain untouched. Remaking any of Studio Ghibli’s films would disrespect their incredible work.

Fortunately, Hayao Miyazaki prefers creating original films and his Studio Ghibli has largely avoided the current Hollywood practice of revisiting older movies with new technology.

Shrek Is Still a Family Favorite Franchise

Originally intended as a humorous take on traditional fairy tales, Shrek unexpectedly became a beloved and iconic fantasy film. Released in 2001, the animated movie centers on Shrek, an ogre voiced by Mike Myers, who journeys through a fantastical world to rescue a princess from a dragon—though his main goal is simply to get back to his peaceful swamp.

Along the way, his companions come to see him for more than his verdigris, which hides a heart of gold.

Shrek quickly became a classic thanks to its funny, self-aware humor and memorable characters, and it remains popular with audiences today. Those who enjoyed the original film still love Shrek and its supporting cast, and many of those characters are expected to return in the upcoming DreamWorks movie, Shrek 5.

But this also means fans are deeply attached to the original film and would likely react negatively to any remake.

The Dark Crystal Works Best as It Is

Released in 1982, The Dark Crystal is a visually stunning and imaginative fantasy film that unfortunately didn’t receive the recognition it deserved. Created with incredible puppetry by the Jim Henson Company, the movie blends epic fantasy with a dark, cautionary tale. It tells the story of two young characters on a journey to save their world from a cruel and oppressive regime.

Although it didn’t directly lead to more seasons of the Netflix prequel, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, many fans still hope for a continuation of the story. However, the reality is that The Dark Crystal may have already reached its peak. The unique art of puppetry, so central to the film, has become less common in Hollywood over the years.

As a huge fan of The Dark Crystal, I think a reboot would really miss the point. They’d inevitably rely on CGI and motion capture, and honestly, that would completely erase what made the original so special. The puppets weren’t just a technical choice, they were the film’s unique personality. Trying to recreate it with modern effects would just lose all that magic, so I think it’s best to leave The Dark Crystal as a one-of-a-kind classic.

The Princess Bride Caught Lightning in a Bottle

Directed by Rob Reiner, The Princess Bride is a truly special fantasy film. It playfully pokes fun at common fantasy story elements while also fully embracing them, creating a remarkably fun movie experience. The 1987 film is presented as a grandfather reading a story to his grandson, allowing for delightfully over-the-top moments and a perfect blend of adventure, romance, and revenge – everything a fan could ask for in the genre.

The Princess Bride is a rare success story – despite having a mix of different ideas and situations that shouldn’t have worked together, it became a beloved and unforgettable movie. It’s a film that’s truly one-of-a-kind, and a remake could never duplicate its special charm.

Despite this, studios have still considered making a new version of the film, but strong reactions from fans likely prevented a remake of The Princess Bride with updated Hollywood elements.

The Lord of the Rings Is the Greatest Fantasy Franchise of All Time

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic books, is widely considered the greatest fantasy series ever made. The films tell the story of Frodo Baggins, a young Hobbit, and his dangerous journey to destroy a powerful object as a great war begins. Throughout his adventure, Frodo forms strong bonds with his companions and brings a renewed sense of hope to the people of Middle-earth.

Each film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is consistently excellent. While director Peter Jackson’s movies don’t include every single detail from the books, they brilliantly capture the heart and spirit of Tolkien’s story.
