As a total cinema and TV devotee, when I think about the greatest series ever made, The Sopranos always comes to mind. It really kicked off this era of high-quality, ‘prestige TV’ – you know, the kind of show that followed with things like Breaking Bad, The Wire, and even early Game of Thrones. But there’s one show that often gets overlooked when we talk about that golden age, and it’s a real shame. It features a protagonist as brilliantly flawed and complex as Tony Soprano, a fantastic supporting cast, and honestly, some of the most unforgettable episodes and visuals ever created for television. I’m talking about Mad Men, of course. And for those of us who’ve already watched it a dozen times, or those who’ve been meaning to give it a try, it’s finally coming to streaming in gorgeous 4K!
Fans will be able to stream all episodes of Mad Men on HBO Max starting this December. And it won’t just be the original episodes – the series has been beautifully remastered in 4K for a stunning viewing experience, even though the standard HD version still looks great. The 4K version of Mad Men will be available on HBO Max beginning December 1st.
Created by Matthew Weiner, who previously worked on The Sopranos, Mad Men premiered on AMC in 2007 and ran for seven seasons, concluding in 2015. The show stars Jon Hamm as Don Draper, a talented advertising executive in New York City whose personal life is often self-destructive. Through Don, Peggy (played by Elisabeth Moss), and their colleagues at Sterling Cooper, the series depicts key moments in American history during the post-World War II era. Here’s a brief description of the show:
Set in 1960s New York, the story follows Don Draper, a successful and confident advertising executive. He’s a leading figure at a competitive Madison Avenue firm, but also navigates the challenges of being a husband and father to young children.
How ‘Mad Men’ Was Created

AMC
Before creating Mad Men, Matthew Weiner wrote for shows like The Sopranos. In a 2010 interview with The Archive of American Television, he explained that the idea for Mad Men started with wanting to create a show set in the 1960s. Because this was before the internet, Weiner hired a researcher to learn about the decade, and one surprising discovery was the ban on tobacco advertising.
He started his career researching the challenges facing cigarette advertising. However, he was more interested in exploring a personal story – that of a man around 35, seemingly successful but deeply unhappy. This bleak idea eventually led to the creation of Don Draper, who became one of television’s most famous and complex characters, alongside figures like Tony Soprano.
