Tom Stoppard, often hailed as one of the greatest playwrights of his generation, has died aged 88.
The writer, who was born in Czechoslovakia and became a British citizen, passed away at his home in Dorset, England. This was confirmed by his agency, United Agents.
As a movie lover, I was really saddened to hear about Tom’s passing. Everyone’s talking about how his films weren’t just technically brilliant, but also deeply human – you could really feel something when you watched them. He had this amazing, playful energy and a real kindness that came through in everything he did, plus he clearly just loved words. It was a privilege for those who worked with him, and just knowing him seemed to be a gift.
Tom Stoppard received numerous awards for his work in theater, television, film, and radio. He was famous for blending history and humor, using them as a springboard to explore big questions about life and art.
He received Tony Awards for his acclaimed plays, including Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1968), Travesties (1976), The Real Thing (1984), The Coast of Utopia (2007), and Leopoldstadt (2023).
He won an Academy Award for helping write the screenplay for Shakespeare in Love and also contributed to the scripts of popular films like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Tom Stoppard continued to write plays throughout his life. His final work, Leopoldstadt, which premiered in 2020, drew inspiration from his family’s story and was partially based on his own experiences.
In a 2022 review, TIME magazine explained that the play explores how unreliable memory is and how people cope with the unpredictable nature of history.
In an interview with TIME, he explained that he wanted to end his work on the play with something meaningful and important. He put it simply: ‘If I was going to finish with this play, I wanted to finish with something substantial.’
“Insofar as comedy and tragedy pass through me,” he added, “they emerge intricately connected.”
Stoppard was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 for his services to literature.
He is survived by four children, including the actor Ed Stoppard, and several grandchildren.
