Wake Up Dead Man Breaks Knives Out Franchise’s Box Office Streak With Disappointing Thanksgiving Run

The latest film in the Knives Out series, Wake Up Dead Man, has ended a successful run for the franchise. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, this third mystery began playing in select theaters on November 26th before becoming a Netflix streaming exclusive on December 12th.

According to Deadline, “Wake Up Dead Man” is expected to make $1.5 million over the first three days of Thanksgiving weekend and $2.5 million over the full five days. This will give it a debut at number 7 in the box office, following films like “Eternity,” “The Running Man,” “Predator: Badlands,” “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” “Wicked: For Good,” and “Zootopia 2.”

This is the first time a Knives Out movie hasn’t opened in the top five at the box office. All three films directed by Rian Johnson were released over Thanksgiving weekend, but the first one, from 2019, started with a strong $26.8 million over its first three days and $41.4 million over the five-day holiday.

The 2022 follow-up film, Glass Onion (released by Netflix with a limited run in theaters), opened at number 3 in theaters, earning $9.4 million over its first three days and $13.3 million over the five-day opening weekend.
