Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney’s “astoundingly abysmal” superhero flop has just landed on Netflix

The 2024 superhero movie Madame Web, which became a popular meme despite being a box office failure, is now available to stream on Netflix in the UK. It was previously on NOW, but has since moved to the platform.

The movie features Dakota Johnson as Cassie Webb, a woman haunted by premonitions of a masked killer targeting three future superheroes. She sees glimpses of their deaths before they gain their powers.

She also has a difficult history to face, connected to her mother’s research on spiders in the Amazon before her death.

The film features Sydney Sweeney from Christy, Isabela Merced known for Superman, Emma Roberts of American Horror Story, and Adam Scott from Severance.

Despite featuring well-known actors, the film didn’t attract large cinema audiences and only earned $100 million. It performed well on US Netflix after being added last year, and now there’s hope it will be equally successful with UK viewers.

Okay, so I checked Rotten Tomatoes, and honestly, fellow fans aren’t loving this one – it’s sitting at only 53% positive. But the critics really didn’t like it – a super low 10% based on almost 280 reviews! It’s a pretty harsh score, to be honest.

Critics were harsh on the movie Madame Web. The Globe and Mail described it as “astonishingly awful,” while Empire felt it was poorly written in every way – lacking both detail and depth.

In a harsh review, The Atlantic criticized the acting as remarkably uninspired, pointing out a lack of effort in all aspects of the production, from performances to the story and sets. They felt that actor Dwayne Johnson, in particular, delivered a particularly lackluster performance – so much so that it was an insult to even suggest he had put in minimal effort.

The performances often feel awkward and unnatural, as if the actors aren’t quite connecting with each other. Even in scenes with multiple people, the dialogue delivery seems strangely delayed, like they’re performing remotely.

It’s worth noting that Johnson anticipated the negative reception to Madame Web, as she herself stated.

Making movies is incredibly difficult, and increasingly, even smaller films are being shaped by committees rather than individual creative vision. This is concerning because art rarely thrives when it’s made by group decision, instead of a single artist’s vision.

“Even if films start to be made with AI, humans aren’t going to f**king want to see those.”

Madame Web is available to stream now on Netflix.
