I Loved Eternity So Much That I Think It Restored My Faith in Rom-Coms, Let Me Explain

I generally avoid movies with love triangles – they just don’t appeal to me. While I’m sure some are well-made, I usually lose interest. However, the cast of Eternity completely changed my mind.

I’m a big fan of both Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller, so I was really looking forward to seeing them in a project together. While I don’t know Callum Turner’s work as well, he seems like a natural fit for a romantic role.

When I learned that Eternity was screening at the 61st Chicago International Film Festival, I immediately wanted to see it, and I ended up loving it.

I Really Enjoyed How Eternity Sets Up The Battle Of Enduring Love Vs. Lost Love

What I especially liked about the movie Eternity is that it wasn’t just a typical love triangle. It explored what kind of lasting love truly suited Joan (played by Elizabeth Olsen). She had to choose between a lifetime with her first husband, who died in the war, and the man she shared her life with as she grew older.

Joan and Larry share a long-lasting love that has weathered many challenges, but it’s become comfortable and perhaps a little predictable. Luke, on the other hand, offers a thrilling new beginning and a chance at a different kind of connection.

Joan found herself caught between two meaningful love stories, both filled with genuine connection. The film isn’t about which love is better, but rather which one is right for her. What makes Joan’s situation unique is that she gets to fully experience both possibilities before deciding what she truly wants.

I think true love should ultimately prevail, but what “true love” means varies from person to person. It could be a lifelong partnership, or it could be a powerful connection with someone you never quite forget, even if the relationship didn’t last.

True love prevails in Eternity, making this film a fun and engaging romantic comedy because it explores different types of love against each other.

I Was Torn On Who Joan Should Pick, But I Hoped She Would Pick This Husband

I really dislike love triangles because I always have a clear preference for who a character should end up with. It’s frustrating when that doesn’t happen, especially after investing time in a show, movie, or book – it feels like a waste of time and my hopes are dashed. It’s unusual for me to genuinely be unsure about who a character should choose.

Watching Eternity was a compelling experience. I found myself torn between two possible outcomes, but ultimately leaned towards one, though I would have been happy with either. That’s a testament to the writers, who created two well-developed and sympathetic male characters. Joan was faced with a difficult choice, but I mostly found myself hoping Larry would succeed.

I Think Larry And Luke Were The Right Choices For Joan, Just At Different Times

You know, looking back, I always felt Larry was the right man for Joan after losing Luke. Luke was her first love, that innocent, all-consuming kind you only experience once. It was beautiful, but also a little heartbreaking because life hadn’t had a chance to complicate things yet. But Larry… he came along when she really needed someone steady and kind. He was so patient and just loved her completely. They built a really wonderful life together, and honestly, it was a good fit after the raw emotion of losing Luke.

Joan and Luke didn’t have a chance to find out if they could have spent a lifetime together. They never got to see if their connection would have blossomed into a lasting love story. While it’s impossible to know if they were truly meant to be, their brief time together was meaningful and enough for that moment.

Eternity Is Also A Really Good Movie About Appreciating What You Have Vs. Constantly Thinking About What You Lost

Larry and Joan are in love, but Joan still holds a special place in her heart for someone from her past, Luke. While Luke’s death doesn’t cause problems when they’re all living, his memory becomes a challenge after they pass on. Joan idealizes Luke, remembering only the good things about him and forgetting any difficulties they had while he was alive, especially because his death was so sudden and heartbreaking.

He was now seen as flawless and unchanging. She constantly grieved for him, and perhaps her feelings for Larry diminished because Luke had captured so much of her affection. She confessed this to Larry, who had always suspected it, but it hadn’t seemed important then. Now, it finally does.

Larry stepped aside, allowing Joan to be with Luke, the man she’d been thinking about for a long time. While she enjoys being with Luke, she’s come to realize her heart truly belongs to Larry.

After a lifetime together, she may not have fully realized how precious their time was while she was living it, but she’ll likely treasure those memories forever.

I Loved How The Film Is A Second Chance Movie, But That Differs Depending On How You Interpret It

Okay, so I’m totally rooting for Joan and Luke! It feels like they never really got the chance to have a marriage, you know? Luke is clearly still in love with Joan – he’s always regretted losing her. But Larry? He’s perfectly content with how things are with Joan now and doesn’t want to revisit the past. It’s a tough situation, because Luke just wants to finally experience the love story he always dreamed of with Joan.

The idea of second chances is central to the story of Eternity, and it manifests in different ways. Larry and Joan are given another opportunity to be together eternally, which deepens their love and appreciation for one another. However, Luke and Joan also get a second chance at a relationship, but they realize it’s not meant to be, as Joan has changed significantly since his passing.

Joan is given another opportunity at love. After Luke passes away, she finds herself with Larry, and ultimately, in the afterlife, she chooses him as her partner. He wasn’t originally meant to be her husband, but he’s the one she truly desires.

The idea of getting another opportunity is central to Eternity. While life doesn’t always offer do-overs, death might provide one.

Eternity is an upcoming movie that you need to watch, especially if you like A24 movies.
