A key actor from the Ahsoka series has confirmed they won’t be back for season 2. The first season, which premiered in 2023, focused on the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn (played by Lars Mikkelsen) during the New Republic era. The season also introduced Thrawn’s new allies – three powerful witches known as the Great Mothers from the planet Dathomir.
Claudia Black, who played Great Mother Klothow in the first season, recently told Bleeding Cool that she won’t be returning for season two. While there were initial plans for her to come back after the show was renewed, filming is now taking place in London. As a single mother based in Los Angeles, she wasn’t offered enough compensation to cover the costs of filming abroad.
Lauren Black has shared her disappointment about not appearing in the second season of Ahsoka, calling it “very sad.” She reached out to showrunner Dave Filoni to express her gratitude for the chance to have been involved. She also talked about how interesting it was to work with the show’s virtual production technology, known as the Volume. You can read her full thoughts below.
I want to be upfront about why I won’t be in season two. The show was renewed, and I was initially brought back as well, but Disney’s current financial structure couldn’t accommodate my salary needs. As a single mother with responsibilities in Los Angeles, and the season filming in London, it just wasn’t feasible, and I had to step away.
I was really moved by the experience. I emailed Dave Filoni, simply saying, “What a journey!” As someone who loved Star Wars growing up in the 70s and 80s, it was a dream come true to work in such a creative and fun environment. I’m so thankful I had the chance to be part of that universe, surrounded by wonderful people and directors. Working with ‘The Volume’ – their incredibly high-tech set – was fascinating. It was amazing to see technology George Lucas had envisioned for years finally come to life, and to even speak with the company that made it happen – something people once thought was impossible.
It’s unclear if the character of Great Mother Klothow will be played by a different actor now that Black has left the role. However, a recast seems probable, considering the character was planned to return and what happened at the end of Ahsoka season 1. We last saw the Great Mothers heading back to the main galaxy and their home world, Dathomir, along with Grand Admiral Thrawn.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m still reeling from the latest reveals! It turns out Grand Admiral Thrawn wasn’t just helping the Great Mothers on Peridea – they’re working together on Dathomir too. Apparently, they had a deal: they were loading crates pulled from the catacombs onto the Eye of Sion. The really creepy part? Those crates seem to be full of bodies, and the Great Mothers – especially Klothow – are planning to bring them back to life. It’s all part of some bigger, darker plan, and honestly, it’s giving me chills!

As a big fan of shows like Ahsoka, I was really interested to hear what Rosario Dawson had to say, and it brought up a bigger point about how things are changing in Hollywood. Apparently, Lucasfilm decided to shoot season two over in London instead of here in Los Angeles, and it’s all about the money. It’s not just Ahsoka either – a lot of productions are heading overseas for filming. While it makes sense financially for the studios, it’s tough for so many actors and crew who live and work here in LA and depend on those local jobs.
The next chapter of Ahsoka, including the stories of Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Great Mothers, is expected to arrive in 2026. Filming for season 2 has finished in London. Rosario Dawson will return as Ahsoka Tano, alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, and Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger. Following the sad passing of Ray Stevenson, Rory McCann will now play Baylan Skoll.
