As a huge fan of the first Zootopia, I’ve been so excited for Zootopia 2, and I’m really happy to see it’s breaking a recent pattern of lukewarm reviews for Disney movies! It’s been almost ten years since we first visited that amazing animal city, and honestly, the original is still one of my all-time favorite Disney films. So, the sequel had a lot to live up to! Thankfully, it looks like Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin are leading another fantastic adventure, and early signs suggest it’s totally up to the challenge!
Early reviews for Zootopia 2 are overwhelmingly positive, actually breaking a recent trend of mixed reactions to Disney animated films. The sequel currently boasts a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, after initially debuting with a 94% score.
This is the first full-length animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios to earn a 90% or higher rating on review sites since Encanto in 2021. It follows three previous films – starting with Strange World in 2022 – that didn’t reach the ‘Certified Fresh’ standard (needing a score of at least 75%).
It’s surprising to see a recent drop in quality from Walt Disney Animation Studios, given their history of success. Before the release of Strange World, the studio had an impressive run of 13 consecutive films that were considered “Certified Fresh” – a positive rating streak that began with the 2008 movie Bolt.
The sequel to Zootopia, titled Zootopia 2, will be released in theaters on November 26th. Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the movie features animal detectives Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps as they solve the mystery of a new snake appearing in the city of Zootopia, which is usually populated by mammals.
Breaking Down Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Last Few Years
Encanto

The most recent Walt Disney Animation Studios film to earn a ‘Fresh’ rating of 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes is the popular Encanto. Released during the COVID-19 pandemic, this lively musical drew inspiration from Colombian stories and centers on a young girl who doesn’t receive a magical gift, unlike the rest of her extraordinary family.
Released in 2021, Encanto has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics and audiences alike have praised its beautiful animation, memorable soundtrack by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and heartwarming story about family. However, despite being popular on streaming services, a sequel hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
Strange World

Disney’s Strange World, released in late 2022, signaled a period of less consistent performance for the studio’s animated films. While not a complete failure, the original sci-fi story received mixed reviews, earning a score of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes.
When Strange World came out, many people talked about what it didn’t have – a memorable soundtrack, a fresh story, and unique characters. Instead, it felt like a predictable science fiction tale with familiar tropes and characters.
Wish

Disney continued to face challenges in 2023 with the release of the animated musical Wish. Intended as a celebration of Disney’s 100th anniversary, the film tells the story of a young girl who makes friends with a fallen star in a world where wishes appear to be possible, and includes many hidden details for viewers to discover.
Despite being promoted as the grand finale of a century of Disney’s stories, the animated film was poorly received by critics, scoring a low 48% on review aggregators.
Moana 2

The latest in a string of disappointments was last year’s Moana 2. The first Moana was a huge hit for Disney, unexpectedly becoming one of their most popular and reliable franchises.
The movie, initially planned as a series for Disney+, was ultimately released as a full-length film and surprisingly grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Despite this success, it received mixed reviews, with many critics feeling it didn’t quite work as a theatrical release – like it was better suited for streaming.
Zootopia 2

The release of Zootopia 2 has marked a turning point. After a period of less successful sequels, the film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, achieving a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being hailed by some as one of the best Disney sequels ever made.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really hoping this is the start of another incredible streak for Disney. I mean, with Frozen 3 already planned, things are looking seriously promising!
